  • Don't complain about lack of options. You've got to pick a few when you do multiple choice. Those are the breaks.
  • Feel free to suggest poll ideas if you're feeling creative. I'd strongly suggest reading the past polls first.
  • This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

And Killjoys and Dark Matter are both Canadian. We're starting to see an explosion of Canadian sci-fi ever since Continuum, and doing a pretty decent job of it, IMO. I've only started watching Killjoys, but Dark Matter is pretty good and Continuum is awesome (only 6 episodes left forever! :'( ) It throws me every time they mention that they are in Vancouver and I'm like "Whoa! I am American, and watch a lot of Sci-Fi. I must be getting old, I also have heard of exactly zero of these shows. Then again I only watch live TV (read - watch TV with actual ads) when watching occasional sporting events, and do not do social media. So I may be a bit late to the party with any new TV shows.

However, with streaming options I actually prefer being late to the party, particularly for Sci-Fi. How many Sci-Fi shows has FOX killed in the last 15 years, usually before their time? If a show is canceled early I don't care, as I am likely not watching it. If it doesn't I don't have to wait weeks or months between episodes by the time I start watching.

Now stop complaining when your favorite show gets canceled, and get off my lawn.

Sense8 is a Netflix series, so the whole season shows up at once. You could watch the whole season in a suitably long day.

Netflix is not going to cancel it partway through the first season, as normal broadcast TV has done with every good series I've started watching in the last decade. I've pretty well given up on normal broadcast television.

I'm watching sense8, and it's good. Straczinsky, of Babylon 5 fame, is the writer. He was delighted by the absence of the constraints that the networks normally put on him. And there are no commercial breaks.

The show put you right in the middle of everything right at the beginning. I found the first episode utterly confusing and utterly fascinating. Things start to clear up after a few more episodes. I don't have time to binge-watch. I'm only up to episode 6, and it's still going strong.

I don't know yet whether this is a complete story or just one season of a longer tale. Of course it could be both.

I don't know yet whether this is a complete story or just one season of a longer tale. Of course it could be both.

Both. By the end of the season several of the story arcs get completed, including the primary "big" conspiracy type plot, while others are left hanging and the big plot introduces its own cliffhanger, presumably to lead into a new season storyline later.

My take on Sense8 is that it started out weak, at least for the first couple episodes; it was strongest in the middle up until the last episode or two; and then the end of the season was interesting but slightly unsatisfying. I don't want to spoil anything, so I can't say a lot about it, but the way the last couple episodes of the season played out, it basically turned one of the characters into a damsel-in-distress trope as way to give the characters a high-stakes problem to solve.

Still, I'd watch a second season if one gets made. The concept is interesting and enough of the characters were either entertaining or interesting that I was willing to sit through the annoying or boring characters' parts to see more.

Probably my biggest complaint is that it came across vaguely preachy in a few places, mostly related to the transgender hacker character. There was so much emphasis placed on her difficulties with her family and acceptance of being transgender that it just seemed jarring when compared to the amount of screen time and focus that other characters, placed life-or-death situations, got at the same time. I couldn't shake the feeling that it was shoehorned in by the Wachowskis as a way to preach about transgender acceptance or something. It wasn't just screen time, either, though I can't pinpoint exactly what else gave me that impression; something about the presentation of it just seemed off, like it was getting extra emphasis because it was someone's pet agenda.

Luckily, that was mostly an early-season problem and it improved greatly when they started focusing on the wider cast more. I think my favourite character arc was the Seoul businesswoman's, followed by the German safecracker guy. They had stories that could have stood well alone, separate from the rest of the show, and left me wanting to see more of their stories. I also liked the Mexican character's arc, but it was a weird one; it seemed fairly trivial and largely disconnected from the rest, and by itself wasn't very interesting, but the characters (and their actors) made the arc far more entertaining than it had any right to be. I ended up liking it despite itself entirely based on the merit of the characters within it.

TL;DR: If anyone's thinking of watching it, give it a shot. It's worth a try, even if the beginning seems off-putting, because there's a large, varied cast and they all get their share of screen time over the course of it. Even if you hate some of the arcs or find some of the characters annoying, you'll probably like some of the others enough to want to keep going. Also, it's better taken as a whole than as single episodes. You don't need to binge watch, but it's not a show that you can judge by any single episode.

It looks like Nomi was Lana Wachowski's "first trans character" and much of her story is autobiographical. I can see how that might come off as a "pet agenda" though, and I hope her future trans characters will feel more integrated into the story.

It looks like Nomi was Lana Wachowski's "first trans character" and much of her story is autobiographical

Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about. It was obvious that the character's problems were personal to one of the writers, and at times -- especially early on -- it came across ham-fisted, like she was determined to tell everyone about her problems in story form. Because it was clearly personal to the writer, there were times when it felt like the gravity of Nomi's problems were exaggerated compared to the other characters, and I found it off-putting. Still, like I was saying, it got better about it a few episodes in when the conspiracy plotline started to pick up and more attention was given to the other characters' stories. By the end of it, Nomi showed signs of being an actual character in the story instead of just being the author's megaphone.

Overall, even the characters I didn't like as much generally improved by the end of the season, and most of the clunkiness could be attributed to first season growing pains. The exception, in my opinion, was the Indian woman. Like the Mexican actor, she was mostly irrelevant to the greater plot, but also had the added problem that her own personal storyline was less interesting than his and the characters involved weren't entertaining enough to hold it together.

Not that everyone had to be super-important to the main plot; Sun Bak and Wolfgang weren't tied into the main plot except to provide convenient skills (primarily Sun Bak's martial arts), but their own storylines were interesting enough that it didn't matter. Especially Sun Bak, whose story was probably one of my favourite parts and the bastards left it hanging with no sign of any resolution. Even if I disliked the rest of the show, I'd probably watch a second season just to get a continuation of that story.

FWIW, I thought Sense8 was much like the first season of Kiefer Sutherland's Touch. [imdb.com] A sort of mystical (in the kabala/sufi/gnostic tradition) fantasy story rather than science fiction. If you watch Touch, don't even bother with the 2nd season, they tried to turn it into 24 by taking away all the stuff that made S1 unique. Sense8 was better than S1 Touch, but given the constraints of primetime Touch was decent.

I agree. I have since the previous post watched the other available episodes, six in total at the moment I believe. It's growing on me, like space fungus. They are slowly fleshing out the story and it is becoming better -- or at least more interesting. Having given the other shows in the poll a quick glance I do believe that Dark Matter is probably the superior sci-fi show on the list. Mostly due to the others just being awful.

Still the show, Dark Matter, is like a sci-fi cliche or parody when it comes to the crew, we have: the hot babe in charge, the cute teenage girl with the colored hair and punk outfits, the clean nice guy, the scruffy guy (that is probably a softy on the inside), the token black dude, the asian dude that is a ninja and finally a robot/android that just doesn't understand human interaction or speech mannerisms at all and instead tries to interpret everything literally. All this while flying around in an awesome spaceship which I guess they explained how they got in a the last episode -- spoiler the black dude stole it. The only thing missing is the comic relief alien. But I guess they might find one of those eventually.

No he didn't. Their ship is their ship. The stolen ship is a totally different ship which we haven't actually seen on screen and probably never will because it was only a plot device for his back story.

            > Still the show, Dark Matter, is like a sci-fi cliche or parody when it comes to the crew,

Oh please. There are only so many character variations available. If you want characters who aren't archetypes you have a choice - either they are completely flavorless or they are so nuanced and complex that the show turns into a character study instead of a sci-fi adventure.

I think it's the best 'British' TV scifi since they brought back Dr Who (and which I think suffered from over-ambitious attempt to outdo itself each season ever since).

I like the understated acting, the lack of special effects, the absence of crazy chase scenes and fights. It's what British scifi used to be about - posing questions, letting you think about the options, then offering it's own take on the answers.

Sure, they've glossed over some of the hard scifi issues, and there are anachronisms given the setting of an alternative world in our time. It's not perfect by any means.

But it's far and away the best series of its type that I've scene screened free to air in the UK for a very long time indeed.

BTW if you haven't seen it, you should be able to watch via proxy from the channel 4 website (I think the first episode is still up, but will probably be 'expired' by the end of the week)

But what do I know - I'm still watching re-runs of TNG. Special effects may have improved, but, IMNSHO, naratives haven't. The special effects budgets of "The Measure of a Man" and "The Most Toys" was practically zero, for example, and those still stand out today as absolutely classic science fiction episodes.

As an American I would totally go for that. Many high-quality non-english tv shows get pirate releases with english subtitles, official or 'fansubs' and I don't just mean anime and asian dramas. Examples include the danish show "The Killing (Forbrydelsen)," the swedish "The Bridge (Broen)" and the israeli "Prisoners of War (Hatufim)."

The other thing you are missing is that the US entertainment market dominates the world. Many US shows get dubbed/subtitled releases in other markets or just outright pirated. For example, the star of Empire has publicly thanked pirates [indiewire.com] for generating the interest required to bring the show to the UK on a traditional channel.
