An alternative for systemd

For those Linux users who bemoan the very existence of "systemd", there was an interesting piece in the weekly DistroWatch digest #714. The distro in question, "void" - http://www.voidlinux.eu [voidlinux.eu] - still fits onto a CD which is amazing for a time when some distros can barely squeeze onto a DVD.
However the most interesting part was that they don't use the old "sysinit" system and also don't use "systemd". The distro makes use of "runit" - http://smarden.org/runit [smarden.org]
It will be interesting to see if this gains wider adoption. Devuan, the "greybeard" edition of Debian, has finally reached v1.0 this last week. I guess the race for the best init system is on! Those who understand way more about things like init can shed more light on "runit" vs the others. I hope everyone can learn from the discussion.
