So we have repeated prosecutors passing over this. And notice the highlighted part with respect to ex-lawyer Michael Cohen. Once again, the guilty plea gimmick rears its ugly head. Cohen pleads guilty to this campaign finance charge and some "unrelated tax evasion counts" and avoids more serious jail time for the latter!
Lastly, the nearest comparison case appears to be that of former North Carolina Senator John Edwards who had two campaign donors pay off his ex-mistress for almost a million dollars. Even then, Edwards got off [npr.org] with one not guilty and hung jury on the rest.
We'll see what charges they have and what evidence they rely on. But looks to me like this is one of two long shot trials based on election shenanigans. Of the three government trials I know about, here's my present take on the ranking of difficulty: mishandling of classified documents, this trial, and the Georgia election tampering. It's a classic and often crooked law enforcement maneuver which I have discussed multiple times in the last few years. For example:
Point is that guilty pleas in the US are poisonous. It's way too easy to bully innocent into pleading guilty or for the guilty to plead to exotic charges to avoid punishment for more mundane ones.
As an aside, I actually found an example of a plea deal that likely wasn't crooked [soylentnews.org]. Runaway wrote in that journal:
[...]
Imagine if most crooks could normally just plead "we acknowledge no wrongdoing", pay the fines, and move on. There would be a lot less guilty pleas for starters. Which all points to The Donald and vice-presidential nominee Marjorie T-G returning bigglier than ever in 2024.
Of course if the justice system actually did their due diligence on the January 6th investigation, a scenario would come to pass in which one could avoid all this circus tomfoolery.

It's not actually redundant either, but a clear case of poor reading comprehension and crappy reasoning skills too.
So tell me, was redundant the best choice? If not, let me know and I'll use something different in the future.
Thanks!

Moderator: "Mr. Trump, you claim you won election to the presidency on 2016 and 2020. Is that your contention?"
Trump: "Of course! I won bigly both times! I am the most popular and best president ever! Much better than that Lincoln jerk! And I did more for the niggers^W coloreds^W blacks than he did! And the election was stolen from me!"
Moderator: "If that's the case, the 22nd amendment says 'The amendment prohibits anyone who has been elected president twice from being elected again.' It doesn't say anything about serving as president after winning. As such, if you won the presidential election in 2020, you are constitutionally barred from running again, in 2024 or any other year. Your thoughts?"

I'll be listening to the whining when the tables have turned.
And, neither Trump nor Biden is doing this country any favors. Both should have retired decades ago. Old fools need to get out of the way, and pass the baton to someone with energy and vision.

Just as the things the MAGAs do are political.
If Trump really did break the laws of the state of New York, it is perfectly within all the rules for the prosecutors to try to get a conviction. If that conviction happens to make Trump ineligible to run again, according to the rules, that is exactly how it should be.
Prosecuting Trump for actual crimes using actual evidence does not sink to the low of stuffing the SCOTUS to take away women's rights.
The only side that ever seems to whine when the tables are turned are the MAGAs.
One set of rules for thee and another for me.
By all rights, Trump should have been impeached. Not doing that was purely political.

Local news here in NYC has been covering this extensively.
When Trump (falsely) claimed he was going to be arrested a week and a half ago urging folks to protest, Trump's supporters (all three of them) showed up at the courthouse that evening to protest.
And last night, when the indictment was handed down, three (perhaps the same three?) people showed at Trump Tower to do the same.
Such a yuuuge outpouring of support! In fact, it was the biggest protest in the history of the world! Even bigger than the inauguration crowd!

Some would say the inauguration crowd size was Trump's first lie in office. What a way to start off a presidency - with a lie, over something trivial.
I would suggest that the first lie was actually the oath of office. Over something so important it should shock everyone of any political persuasion. But by the time he took the oath, nothing was considered shocking by that point.
