IN LATE JUNE 2019, right after the U.S. Supreme Court released its final opinion of the term, Justice Clarence Thomas boarded a large private jet headed to Indonesia. He and his wife were going on vacation: nine days of island-hopping in a volcanic archipelago on a superyacht staffed by a coterie of attendants and a private chef.

If Thomas had chartered the plane and the 162-foot yacht himself, the total cost of the trip could have exceeded $500,000. Fortunately for him, that wasn’t necessary: He was on vacation with real estate magnate and Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, who owned the jet — and the yacht, too.

For more than two decades, Thomas has accepted luxury trips virtually every year from the Dallas businessman without disclosing them, documents and interviews show. A public servant who has a salary of $285,000, he has vacationed on Crow’s superyacht around the globe. He flies on Crow’s Bombardier Global 5000 jet. He has gone with Crow to the Bohemian Grove, the exclusive California all-male retreat, and to Crow’s sprawling ranch in East Texas. And Thomas typically spends about a week every summer at Crow’s private resort in the Adirondacks.

The extent and frequency of Crow’s apparent gifts to Thomas have no known precedent in the modern history of the U.S. Supreme Court.

These trips appeared nowhere on Thomas’ financial disclosures. His failure to report the flights appears to violate a law passed after Watergate that requires justices, judges, members of Congress and federal officials to disclose most gifts, two ethics law experts said. He also should have disclosed his trips on the yacht, these experts said.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been accepting millions in undisclosed luxury travel from a GOP megadonor for decades.

This guy Crow https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlan_Crow [wikipedia.org] is really something else. Origins like Trump, father started a big real estate company--adding to my personal finding that I've never met anyone I liked or trusted in real estate. One exception would be a bottom level real estate agent, we found one good one that helped find our house.

Crow has also funded Thomas's wife in various ways.

What "family business" are you speaking of? Be specific. It would also help a lot if you provided some evidence too. And I mean real evidence, not tabloid innuendo.

Tennessee Republican lawmakers took the first steps Monday to expel three Democratic members from the GOP-dominant House for their role in a recent gun control protest at the state Capitol.

Resolutions have been filed against Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson after they led chants from the House floor with supporters in the gallery last Thursday. The resolution declared that the three had participated in "disorderly behavior" and "did knowingly and intentionally bring disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives."

ProPublica uncovered the details of Thomas’ travel by drawing from flight records, internal documents distributed to Crow’s employees and interviews with dozens of people ranging from his superyacht’s staff to members of the secretive Bohemian Club to an Indonesian scuba diving instructor.

That sounds like a very serious situation. When I first skimmed the story, I wondered where the allegations came from. This goes way beyond the minimal two sources for a story and explains why they had so much detail about the misdeeds in question.

If the accusations turn out correct, then hasta la vista. It would be a pretty blatant breaking of the law. Even if somehow Thomas didn't realize the severity of the conflict of interest, it would be at the very best a case of remarkably poor judgment which would justify his removal.

While it is nice to see you not knee-jerk defending Thomas your "if the accusations are true" is not far off from defending him.

While actual reporters must use cautious language the facts are very real and very simple. Thomas violated the law by not disclosing these regular trips, full stop. Whether the corrupted US government, specifically the GOP invested in their corrupt judges, will do anything is one of the many tests for whether freedom will prevail in the US or whether they will require a fall into total fascism first.

Yes, and that point is reserved for the courts to determine. There is no doubt Thomas is corrupt, just as there is no doubt Trump committed numerous crimes. Corruption will continue as long as shills provide excuses that the general public will tolerate. If people called for jailing Thomas without a trial then you can worry, but until then it is perfectly acceptable to call out the corruption. There is no disputing that Thomas took these vacations and did not declare most of them as legally required. He is guilty, but will the fascist GOP be able to spin it with their corrupt dem pals to avoid holding those in power responsible? That is the question whose answer will determine the fate of the USA. Sad that so many conservatives who claim to want better government provide cover for the corrupt.

It is time to stop giving credibility to rightwing bootlickers like khallow that still can't admit there was a Republican insurrection over the 2020 election. Even your comment calls it out with "that said...." and is all I'm asking of khallow. Instead the shill keeps pushing "if guilty" because it seeds doubt and lays the foundation for some bullshit like Barr's "can't prosecute a sitting prez" memo. Hell, dubya has had his image rehabilitated instead of being tried at the Hague, cuz Murrica! If there is any justice left in this country then he should be held accountable, most likely removed by the impeachment process. Imagine that. You manage to be incisive, while mocking the 2A. Yes, since you bring it up, virtually every gun control law ever written in what is now the US was racist by nature, even when not racist in intent. The first laws were specifically aimed at slaves, then later, very specifically aimed at black folk. Then later, when overt racism was outlawed, the laws were written to mask the racism, but still applied unequally against black people.

Why is it that cops still gun down black men with a gun, but generally give a white guy with a gun the opportunity to explain himself? (Assuming that neither the black nor the white guy has been taking random potshots at complete strangers.)

You're not telling the whole story with that. White supremacy, maybe, but there's a healthy dose of authoritarianism, specifically police state authoritarianism. You do realize there are a lot of black cops around the country. Do you really think they apply for, and are accepted in a white supremacy organization? It's more than just that. Or, less than that. Which is greater, racism or authoritarian rule? A racist want to exploit some segment(s) of the human race. The Police State authoritarian wants to exploit the entire human race.

In this case, "alleged" is not appropriate. Clarence Thomas admitted to the paid trips and also receiving other expensive gifts from Harlan Crow. This has also been confirmed by Crow. This is not a situation where the facts are in dispute. Your race baiting is shameful and offensive. Perhaps Thomas believed that the trips and other gifts were personal and didn't need to be disclosed. However, Crow is a political activist who actively attempts to influence nominations to the judiciary. He is effectively a lobbyist. The gifts should have been disclosed. This isn't the first time Thomas has breached ethical standards. His wife's involvement in trying to overturn the 2020 election should have caused Thomas to recuse himself from hearing cases related to the election. He failed to do so.

Your defense is probably that Thomas didn't violate Supreme Court ethical standards. Just because the Supreme Court is lacking in ethical standards does not change that bribery occurred. If anything, the failure is the lack of ethical guidelines for a court that has lost credibility with a large portion of the American people. Supreme Court judges have always been appointed on the basis of ideology, but many Americans now view the court as overtly political. Thomas accepting gifts from a billionaire lobbyist further damages the credibility of the court. Even if Thomas didn't violate the court's ethical standards because they didn't exist, he is still subject to the Constitution. Article II says that bribery is an impeachable offense. Article III says that judges "shall hold their offices during good behaviour." The ethical standards of the Constitution still apply, and Thomas has breached them.

I could see an argument that impeachment could do long term harm and further politicize the court. But that's not where you went. Upholding reasonable ethical standards and expecting judges to act honorably is not racist, and it is certainly not lynching. The facts are not in dispute, and everyone agrees that Thomas received the gifts. If I look out my window and see one person stab another person to death, I don't need a jury to tell me that I witnessed a murder. I can see that with my own eyes. The attacker is still subject to trial by jury, but I don't have to wait for a conviction to know that I saw one person murder another person. The same standard applies here, where everyone can clearly see that Thomas accepted bribes. If any action were taken against Thomas, it would be in the form of impeachment, and he would have due process afforded to him in a Senate trial. That is totally the opposite of lynching, which by definition does not involve any due process. To be blunt, there is effectively zero chance that Thomas gets impeached at all because of the Republican majority in the House.

Yes, Thomas is very unpopular among liberals. That is because of his ideology, not because of his race. Take your race baiting and shove it.

        And...
