Linux user. Tries to keep feeding the brain with stuff. Husband and father of a young lady and a younger son who has autism/is autistic... that nut didn't fall far from this nut-tree, I'll tell ya: he gets it honestly. Now if only he'd sleep..............

I believe that God gave us the science, curiousity and intelligence to one day conclusively prove that God does not exist.

Why does anyone take dark matter seriously?
There are better models out there,

*cough* http://physicsfromtheedge.blogspot.com/ *cough*

and dark matter is CLEARLY a kludge!

Why do people hang onto insanity? (also, string theory? WTF is with that shit?)

Has science gone over to the dark matter side (ie, religion and magic and unicorns)?

EDIT: from a conversation i had with mpc755

Okay, for a second, forget you think I'm a dick/crazy/stupid/whatever,, and take an unbiased look at this:

Curved space time and GR have problems (this is why they came up with dark matter as well as all the fringe theories like MOND, QI, etc):
But if space ISN'T curved, then something ELSE would have to 'appear' to replace it.
QI acts LIKE gravity, except there is a PUSH instead of a pull.

Bear with the dick for another moment.

A planet blocks Unruh waves from one direction and objects are pushed towards the planet by the waves coming from all the other directions.
A beam of light approaches a star and the 'waves' are blocked from hitting the light by the star: the waves from all other directions push it towards the star.
If the light is approaching the star at an angle, as it is passing by the star, the waves that are not blocked push it towards the star JUST as if space was curved.

A planet orbits a sun because it TRIES to follow a straight course but the Unruh waves push on it from all directions EXCEPT where the sun blocks them: it is pushed on from all other directions except the blocked direction and so is pushed TOWARDS the blocked direction!

To me, this is fascinating.
Space not being curved, but matter acting LIKE it is curved without the problems brought in by the curving of space.

And if time does not exist as a part of space/time (Like Julian Barbour, Mach and Einstein suggests (expanding the work of Einstein (AND Mach) BEFORE he decided the math would be too hard and changed to time being a part of space), then there are no worries about the twin paradox and time travel.

To me, the problems introduced by space-time and dark matter are nullified by something like QI.

There are SO many problems solved just by thinking outside the box that I CAN'T HELP but go outside the box and look around: if QI can be proved, it solves SO MANY PROBLEMS.
Am I married to QI? Far more than dark matter, but I am always looking outside that box: give me something BETTER than dark matter or QI and I will take a look at it.
Dark matter, though: I looked at it and it just seems like a fake. A too easy fix.
I need better...we all need better.

I really like the idea and it does seem much more elegant, but according to wikipedia "It is currently not clear whether the Unruh effect has actually been observed, since the claimed observations are disputed. There is also some doubt about whether the Unruh effect implies the existence of Unruh radiation."

So until they can prove the Unruh effect even exists it is up there with the aether and dark matter. Aside from that your blackface metaphor doesn't really work too well. Maybe "dark matter is astronomy's Vietnam"? Or their "windmills" a la Don Quixote? Or just stick to physics and it is their Lumineferous Aether?

There is a lot of inertia behind Dark Matter / Energy, maybe we just need to slow down and reassess ;)?

Sometimes I wonder if the oligarchy has achieved such total control of the media and the Democratic party, that they can play on such fake issues. Ignore the masses of cheap laborers streaming across the southern border, ignore the erosion of well paying jobs and the selling out of our technology to China, but seethe with anger at these racist, appropriating Welsh miners and anyone who questions why women should be allowed to use the men's room and vice versa.

Yeah, I know there are problems, but I still think the science is better here than with dark matter.
I believe they will find Unruh radiation before they find dark matter (and yes, may already HAVE found)

"The existence of Unruh radiation is not universally accepted. Smolyaninov claims that it has already been observed,[13] while O'Connell and Ford claim that it is not emitted at all.[14] While these skeptics accept that an accelerating object thermalizes at the Unruh temperature, they do not believe that this leads to the emission of photons, arguing that the emission and absorption rates of the accelerating particle are balanced."
      So yeah, maybe maybe not.

And the black face is just a play on 'dark' matter. A bad play, but....

When you don't know WTF is going on, you take most any testable hypothesis seriously. What you don't do is reach a consensus on a pet hypothesis, treat it as a theory, and shit upon any other alternative explanations. That's how you science properly.

Yup, that'd indeed be my point. If you're relying on consensus to prove a hypothesis, you've already failed at science. Science DGAF about who believes what, only what can be proven.

You will encounter close minded people all over, often highly educated people have the most closed minds because they think they've figured it all out. That is just really common amongst humans.

No need to explain yourself, if someone can't appreciate potential alternative theories then you're not likely to change their minds.
