How about a 'countdown til next submission births' message: you reload page and a message (near "this page was generated by"...or instead of...) appears that tells you how long til next submission lands?

Echhh, Gark! I love this idea but I'm hooked enough on this place and refreshing the page as it is, without giving me a pretty clock to stare at as well. Though, if we do make one, it should be configurable: digital, analog, roman sundial, binary, hexadecimal, hourglass, etc.
The best would be a countdown until a new comment is posted. We just need to figure out how to predict the future accurately enough.

I like the clock in xubuntu, it says "a quarter to ten" instead of 9:45.

We could still add a message on all pages saying "X minutes until the next story". Or '∞' if there is no next story.

In fact, the footer contains an <em> element that has "float:right; width:45%; text-align:right;" on it, with the current quote. It shouldn't be too hard to stick an "X minutes until the next story..." message that floats on the left-hand side on the same line.
