I could have sworn that I posted about this the other day, but it doesn't appear to be in my journal...odd.
Anyway, I wanted to recommend a guy on Youtube who has been producing interesting videos on events in Ukraine and Russia:
He's an Army vet (and big military history buff) who was stationed in Afghanistan around a decade ago and is proud to have brought all the soldiers he was eventually in charge of back home alive in spite of the violence going on at the time. He's been using his knowledge to explain and analyze troop movements, PG-rated combat videos, and other things related to the war over there. I'm not really into military stuff, but his work is surprisingly interesting, plus offers a lot more information than what appears in our regular news media.

He sounds genuine, doesn't seem to be full of himself. I watched most of a random video from his list. Was there anything in particular that you wanted us to see, or you just wanted to introduce him? I'll give him a "thumbs up", but I don't see anything especially intriguing yet.

This ^ exactly. I see an occasional advert, more often I see blank boxes where an advert was intended to be. If/when I start seeing more ads, I'll peruse my blocking mechanisms, and swap things around until I don't see them anymore. The advertisers make it easy, because they only use a couple hundred servers for most ads. Just block those most used servers, and the job is more than half done. I don't want to invoke He-who-shall-not-be-named, but adding a list like this to your HOSTS list solves much of the problem: https://github.com/anudeepND/blacklist [github.com] Alternatively, you can use the list on your router to block those sites for the entire office/household, depending on your router.

Still, sometimes I just watch their sponsor spot, if I've not actually seen it. In the event that it's a recurring sponsor with the same exact promotion, I'll skip it.

I have pinned the problem down a little. In Ubuntu, Firefox is now loaded as a snap package and not as a normal deb package - in fact there is no longer a deb package offered anymore. Uninstalling snapd, and any programs that I have loaded using snap, and then installing standard downloaded versions (Firefox, Pycharm-Community, etc) seems to have resolved some of the problems. It appears that you can't have the benefits of add-ons and private browsing at the same time if you use the snap installed version of Firefox, but everything is OK with the standard download version. I'm not sure how many people are aware of just how much data is being sent somewhere if you install certain add-ons.
For some reason my previous ad-blocker stopped all the usual ads but not those inside youtube videos. I have changed both Firefox and my ad-blocker and it seems to be working fine for the moment.

Additionally using Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, ClearURLs, Leakuidator+, and UltraBlock. They're all turned on at the moment, but often they're all turned off, and so far, no YouTube ads show at all.
I do worry about what any of the plugins might be sending back. Haven't employed WireShark or smsniff yet, but maybe I will. Trouble is, everything is encrypted now, and IP addresses have no DNS entry, so I have to check NetCraft or some such to find out who owns the IP address. Vivaldi, being a chrome derivative, communicates with many google-owned IP addresses anyway. All very tedious. I do very little online, so there's not much for anyone to find anyway.
