UK’s National Health Service has ordered the closure of a controversial gender clinic for children over a report revealing that some health staff felt pressured to take “an unquestioning affirmative approach” to children experiencing gender dysphoria.
The Tavistock Centre, in north London, is known as the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS). Tavistock was founded in 1920 and originally focused on helping WWI shellshock victims. Since then it has grown to encompass a variety of services under the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust banner, with GIDS focusing on child gender issues. Since 1989 GIDS has treated 19,000 children with gender dysphoria (the feeling that one’s true identity is the opposite gender of their physical body).
The external report expressed concerns, among them the lack of knowledge about the effects of puberty blockers. Dr. Hilary Cass, the head of the review, wrote a letter to the head of NHS England on July 19:
…the most significant knowledge gaps are in relation to treatment with puberty blockers, and the lack of clarity about whether the rationale for prescription is as an initial part of a transition pathway or as a ‘pause’ to allow more time for decision making.
We do not fully understand the role of adolescent sex hormones in driving the development of both sexuality and gender identity through the early teen years, so by extension we cannot be sure about the impact of stopping these hormone surges on psychosexual and gender maturation. We therefore have no way of knowing whether, rather than buying time to make a decision, puberty blockers may disrupt that decision-making process.
It’s interesting to read a professional admitting that they do not know everything about gender dysphoria and transition because every time I hear an “expert” they sound as if there are no unanswered questions and that we have a full understanding of the effects of hormone blockers and surgery. That has been clear a long time, but site staff had handcuffs made from frozen peaches they could point to. After banning aristarchus we found out the handcuffs are unlocked and rather tasty to staff. Any member of our community can moderate a story - I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. The fact that someone has received a spam moderation doesn't mean it was made by a member of staff.
Decisions regarding bans, or other matters regarding the operation of the site, are made by consensus.

Clean up the spam mods. I am not aristarchus yet got a spam mod for pointing out the hypicrisy on the site. Censorship usually does start with preventing criticism. It is 100% ideological bias at work at this point. Someone mocks janrinok? Must be aristarchus! Must ban with soam mods! I am currently in bed! I don't sit on this site 24hrs a day. I usually check Spam moderations once or twice day. If someone thinks that your comment is Spam they may moderate it so. If we disagree then we will revert the moderation - but not at any time of the day or night that you want me to. If somebody repeatedly abuses the moderation system then we warn them about future abuse and the possible consequences.
I give my time voluntarily - that doesn't mean that I am at your beck and call. I don't work for you.
Lots of people make moderations. Lots of people receive them. I am not responsible for them. I am not the only admin responsible for cleaning them up either.
You don't know who has been banned recently unless they have told you, do you? There are different types of ban (moderation, commenting, anonymous commenting, submissions). You cannot tell what bans someone is currently serving.
I'll be back online tomorrow - when I choose to do so. And I will also be packing for my holiday and I have some appointments so my time will be limited.

Do we have evidence that Abraham (or Moses, or the ancient Jewish culture at large) actually invented it? Did Egypt mutilate slaves' genitals? Did other, unrelated cultures practice ritual male infant genital mutilation at that time?
I remember in the first dramatization of Roots, genital mutilation was depicted, but of adult men instead of infants. Was this a traditional practice of Bantu cultures, developed independently of the Jewish tradition of bris, or an anachronism?

Your primary source is portraying this as being very one sided. You are quoting entirely from one rather biased report (RedState). But even this source states (although you omitted to include it) :

I am supporting the rights of transgender people to choose which path they wish to follow. Not sure where your criticism is coming from.
There is a severe shortage of medically qualified personnel in the UK from nurses all the way to the most specialised surgeons. That is the point I am making - there is no magic pot of new skilled personnel just waiting to be allocated to one of the new regional centres. They will have to come from elsewhere in an already overstretched organisation. Actions speak louder than words - the politicians can say what they want to do but they simply haven't got the resources to do it.
As for your other comments, I will get round to looking at the journals when I have the time. They are the least important part of my job.

No - you are wrong. I watch every comment as it arrives on a different view than you have - but I cannot see its full content. One click brings me directly to the comment in question. I don't see any other comments in the same story/journal.
There is yet another display which shows me how the community is moderating each comment but, again, I cannot see the comment itself. It is community moderation that draws my attention to that comment. Moderation however takes time to settle and that is when we review content otherwise we could be unfairly biased by an early moderation.
Finally, you do not know what action we are taking, if any, against any commentators. We do not announce it to the world, we simply act and the only person that needs to know is the one against whom we are acting. If they choose to make it public that is entirely their decision.

Aristarchus chose to make his temporary ban for sock-puppeting public - not us.
Only 1 person has ever been permanently banned from our community. We used a Meta story to explain our reasoning and decision. He then refused to accept his temporary ban and continued to disrupt other discussions. He was warned of the potential consequences but he also chose to ignore those warning too.
We do not publicise temporary bans.
You do not know what action - or inaction - we have taken or will take in the future.

We have moved all the AC crap-flooding posts to the journal discussions. There are very few on the main page now and those are quickly handled by community moderation. It had absolutely nothing to do with aristarchus - who was banned for doxxing, not for espousing philosophy or any particular political view. Those topics of discussion belongs here, in the journals.
It is true that there are fewer comments per story on the main page, but actually more intelligent conversation. The previous comment numbers were inflated with AC noise in the past. The site has increased the number of genuine accounts since the change was made, and the total comments and page hits are also slowly increasing in number. We have lost quite a few ACs but it is not possible to quantify how many. Any numbers that are claimed for ACs losses are simply guesses - no matter who makes them.
Those who wish to publish journals can also select whom they wish to comment on their discussions. I have no visibility of what choices they make so I cannot provide any further data.
What we seek to do now is to improve the variety and standard of submissions, and to encourage new members to join our community. This will not be something that can be fixed in the immediate future but will take time and effort.

With so many different genders to choose from, I would have to agree that the decision would be overwhelming for a grade school child to decide for themselves without the aid of school counselors.
Thank goodness for national gender clinics to the rescue!
I'm sure all of us can sympathize with how difficult the decision was for each and every one of us in our youth to select from the myriad gender choices available. However did we manage to make it to adulthood, some of us.
The choice of gender is one of the most stressful choices each of us has to make in our life. Every one of has has to face that decision. It is more stressful than buying a house. More stressful than buying a car. More stressful than deciding which cable channel to watch.
The anti vax hysteria didn't stop, it just died down.
