This time is oleandrin:

For months, Donald Trump promoted the off-label use of hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 therapy, even claiming to have taken a course of the anti-malarial drug as a prophylactic. But as the evidence against its effectiveness and potential dangers continues to mount—Dr. Anthony Fauci last month emphasized that studies have “consistently” shown the drug to have “no efficacy” in treating coronavirus—the president may have begun to turn toward a new, unproven miracle cure, this one peddled by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and...MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell?

Yes, you read that right. Carson and the pillow pitchman, a GOP megadonor and Trump ally, have gotten the president interested in an experimental botanical extract they say could treat COVID-19, raising concerns among some government officials, Axios reported Sunday. Trump, who has been searching for an easy way out of the coronavirus crisis since it started, has reportedly “expressed enthusiasm” for Oleandrin, as Carson and Lindell push for Food and Drug Administration approval, though—like hydroxychloroquine—there is no proof that it works.

...

Trump’s fondness for the unproven experimental extract is just the latest instance in which he’s latched on to a quick fix for the coronavirus crisis, the biggest obstacle to bid for re-election, in hopes that he can make it all go away without him having to do anything about it. Nationwide mask mandate? Robust testing regime? Who needs them if you’ve got an oleander extract that hasn’t been adequately tested, but that Lindell—who invests in the company that makes it—swears by?

Out with the old, it out-lived its snake-oil fame and there's no benefit in giving it for free; and in with the new snake-oil

This is how one MAGAs, right? People will be dying anyway (covid-19, third cause of death), so why not make a deal with something US can produce instead of importing it from elsewhere? Who cares it's not effective if the money flows and there are chances of kickbacks or just some electoral donations.

---

Edit: My dad was a healthy 65-year-old. His only pre-existing condition was trusting Donald Trump, and for that, he paid with his life.
Good business, killing your voters. One may argue the guy died because of his own stupidity. I wonder how this correlates with Trump voters base?

Negotiating is not to difficult for a band of thieves with the same goals. It can make a "coalition" into a conspiracy.

And within the two party system there are also many coalitions. We call them committees. Some of those have way too much power over the general process, they can block votes, all sorts of stuff.

I still see much more similarity than differences. Nobody is swimming against the stream. Every country is showing the same problems

Curious why you would call some businessman a "far right conman promoting hydroxy", when he had only donated funding for HCQ for doctors to prescribe as the federal minister of health explains:

On April 1, Mr Hunt told A Current Affair he had just spoken to "an international supplier" and was "confident that we will have a significant supply of hydroxychloroquine, which will be available if doctors wish to use them with patients who are in hospital. Those are the terms".
On April 2, the Secretary of the Department of Health created an exemption under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 to allow the Government to stockpile hydroxychloroquine.
However, the department told Fact Check this was "not blanket approval or endorsement for the use of the drug for COVID-19".

There's a few differences. Parliamentary system means responsible government, with the government responsible to Parliament. The party can replace the PM and Parliament can reject the government (might have changed in the UK recently). America, the President is not responsible to anyone except the voters once. There is the impeachment route but that is more for criminal behaviour.
Also Americans vote for most everyone at once. From dogcatcher to President. Voter shows up to vote and is presented with a list of perhaps 50 positions, each often with 4 candidates. It is a lot simpler to just mark a party instead of thinking about such a large list. Here in Canada, there's the Federal election. Each Province has their own election at various times, and then there's the local elections. The Federal and Provincial elections are each for one representative, sometimes the parties are completely different including regional parties and sometimes a new party can start at the Provincial level and then grow into the Federal level.
It still usually ends up in a 2 way race but with the possibility of a hung Parliament, small parties can make a difference. My Province ended up with the 3 Green party members choosing the government and the Federal government only needs the support of one of the other 3 parties to keep governing. Two elections ago, it was actually a 3 way race federally.

:-) Correction. It's the DNC emails that are more relevant. The Clinton email "scandal" was to produce a cover for the gun running through Benghazi to Turkey, then to terrorists "moderate rebels" in Syria. The transfer being made during the rioting. When is there a better time to move contraband, while the cops are occupied elsewhere? A few people were were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Innuendo? Personal hatred? To my eye, it mostly looks like the press is reporting what Trump is saying and doing. Are you sure you are not shooting the messenger for bringing bad news? Maybe what is really getting under your skin is that the press has noticed that Trump is just plain a really rotten, shitty person?

And I expect news media to do the same to the other side, rather than fawning over them and downplaying the riots in our cities as "mostly peaceful".

My understanding is that much of the "rioting" is (or had been) confined to Portland, OR. The rest of the country, not so much. As an example, Trump recently announced that federal law enforcement is coming to Albuquerque, NM (where I live). Remember the film White Oleander? It was used as a poison in the movie to murder someone. Oleandrin is one of the main toxic components, which is a compound similar to digoxin/digitalis (derived from the foxglove plant). In small amounts it can be used to increase the strength the heart pumps blood, like digoxin, but the therapeutic index for oleandrin is similarly narrow. My take is simple: Trump Derangement Syndrome. These people are so triggered hateful of Trump that literally anything he says they go berserk. Watch the rioting videos if you can't quite grasp the depth of the true literal insanity. It's all exactly a lynch mob mentality.

What bothers me the most is that these triggered libtards are arguing from the position that a president is emperor. How about this: a president is NOT emperor! You don't have to do every last little thing Trump says. Especially in Trump's case- he's been saying all kinds of things for way longer than he's been president. Ignore it and move on. There's no law saying you MUST use hydroxychloroquine or any other thing.

My position is: we don't have a cure, and limited therapies, and I'm happy if some people want to experiment on themselves. I'll watch the results and maybe something will work.

Look at the dexamethasone therapy they finally (after 5 months?) figured out is very helpful. "Standard of care" says steroids are contraindicated in infectious disease treatment. The brilliant Brits said "we have to do something" and amazingly- gave a steroid to reduce lung inflammation that was killing people, and whoa, it worked!

All throughout history great discoveries have been made- by accident. Let Trump try the stuff himself!! I think it's heroic.

"Hydroxychloroquine": "Immunosuppressive drug and Anti-parasitic. It can treat and prevent malaria. It can also treat lupus and arthritis."

      https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-5482/hydroxychloroquine-oral/details [webmd.com]

I've heard no one address the possibility that it is an effective prophylactic.

Sorry for the rant obviously meant for others. To answer your good question: it's too difficult to measure prophylaxis short-term. People (patients) are so widely varied, and there are at least 6 variants of COVID-19 that it's too complex to get any reasonable hard data on treatment, let alone prevention. We've seen young die, and very elderly recover. Now they're seeing cardiac damage, and who knows what else they'll find. And they're looking into the possibility that the damage is caused by the immune system / antibodies, not the disease (I wrote "possibility).

This disease is likely the worst to ever hit humanity. I think we need a "all hands on deck" approach- much much increased efforts to find therapies and cures, and 2 years from now we'll wish people had tried a lot more than simple things we get from tree bark like hydroxychloroquine.

Look, we know you're mentally handicapped, but I did write "likely". I know that ruins your brilliant rant, but get over it. And check back here in 2 years and see what COVID-19 has done to the entire world- health, economics, politics, everything. "Likely", shallow, get it?

Excellent points. It may be that it helps more with certain specific strains of COVID-19. And it may be that it helps some people far more than others due to individual body chemistry differences, and may even hurt some. It would be radical if doctors kept closer track of their patients and various treatments and therapies.

Strange that so many people for some reason still believe in hydroxychloroquine, despite several randomised clinical trials illustrating that hydroxychloroquine does not help with COVID-19. It doesn't even work as a prophylactic [nejm.org]. Thanks to Donald Trump and his True Believers, we are continuing to waste our time and effort studying it when there is already ample evidence that it really doesn't work [sciencebasedmedicine.org]. This is the true "Trump derangement syndrome": his supporters who continue to believe in what he says despite there being plenty of evidence that it is false.

Hey genius, Trump is NOT a doctor! I know you didn't know that. You're so triggered because you think he's going to ORDER you to take something you're worried about. But he can't!!! He's not even a doctor!! You and the rest of your libtard herd figured out that he babbles on, but you're still raging like you just discovered it! Get the fuck over it and STFU!

No, that's "Trump derangement sickness", the inability to stop assigning a value to an idiot that proved over and again his contribution to this world is far more on the damage side than otherwise.
