Current Senate is out on January 3, 2021. Even if Republicans lose lots of seats in 2020, they could put in a new Justice before that date.
1 year, 4 months.
In practice, there is probably no forcing a Justice in the last week or two. But RBG still has to survive well over a year. Also, I think she would resign if she thought her health/thinking was in total decline.
Republicans aren't going to care about a lame duck session or the nicety of letting the voters decide through the election. The prize is simply too big to give up on.
Of course, Republicans could win the Senate, Presidency, or both in 2020.
Compare to Garland timeline:
February 13, 2016: Scalia dies. March 16, 2016: Obama nominates Garland. November 8, 2016: She lost. January 3, 2017: 115th Congress enters.
September 2, 2019: Today November 3, 2020: Elections January 3, 2021: 117th Congress enters.
There won't be any stalling like with Garland, since Republicans control the Presidency and Senate. Trump should nominate Amy Coney Barrett [soylentnews.org] in an attempt to energize evangelicals in 2020, and to avoid replacing the preeminent female Justice with a male.
"And I’m on my way to being very well."
Unless anti-aging is perfected very soon, RBG is on the way to being less well and filled with more mutations than ever. High energy photons are entering her body at an alarming rate, delivering a payload of peril.
You can't see the IV's, her walker, or the three people helping to prop her corpse upright. You can't even see the voice box that her handlers speak through!
