This is the mistake they always make: you don't have to get your base to vote for you. If someone really is a never-Trumper or "Blue no matter who," then you don't need to get them to vote for you because, shock of all shock, they already will vote for you. Therefore, you need to get people who normally wouldn't vote for you to do so. Trump did that marvelously by appealing to the populist message, through things like jobs, national security, the economy, etc. He didn't have to get those who hated Hilary and the Dems, he had to get those in the middle who would have been on the fence. It is also how Clinton, Bush, and Obama all won, to name the most recent, and it will be how the next one will win too.
Wall Street Democratic donors warn the party: We'll sit out, or back Trump, if you nominate Elizabeth Warren
Don't criticize them for being rational. Learn from them: Vote for policy, not party. If the democrats deliver your policy of choice, vote Democrat. If the republicans do so, vote Republican. Tribalism just splits the votes equally leaving the power over policy points to the donors.
It is definitely a rational way to look at it. It is also rational to realize that it is better to vote for the guy who might renege vs the guy who says they are against said policy.
Some chance is better than no chance at all.

Until we take the money out of our political system, there will always be those who are swayed by it.
You could kick out every member of the Federal and every state and local government in the US as you suggest, but that won't solve the problem. As long as it takes significant to large amounts of money to get elected, this will be an issue.
