Seeing these two articles, side by side:

...gave me pause with the subtle contradiction.

Try giving The Firehose of Falsehood a read. Yeah, I know, RAND would probably militarize the tendancy of toast to fall buttered side down, but since part of their remit is identifying external threats, I tried to give them a fair hearing.

It covers the nature of the threat that RT (the Kremlin's propaganda arm) poses to, well, everyone not Russia. It works primarily because of the larger ecosystem built around it. While I ignored rt.com almost as soon as I became aware of it, I did not know then that the sloppy reporting was both deliberate and methodical, and part of a much larger network.

The purpose of their propaganda is not to sway your opinion, it's to prevent you from being able to reason at all. Any citation of RT (or any of its siblings) for anything can be ignored, and the citer marked as infohazard. Do not think for a moment that you are immune; they have teams of highly trained psychologists much smarter than the smartest guy in the room, and they have been training and experimenting and improving their attacks. Sadly, RAND did not have any publicly mentionable coutermeasures. Best is to be aware, and don't watch that shit.
