Iconic rock guitarist, Jeff Beck, has died:

Jeff Beck, the British rock-blues guitar innovator, has died after a brief struggle with bacterial meningitis. He was 78 years old.

Beck was an 8-time Grammy nominee and a two-time inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. His work with the Yardbirds, and his own Jeff Beck Group, was profoundly influential to generations of musicians that came after him.

His family released a statement on Wednesday:

"On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck's passing," Beck's family said in a statement. "After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss."

On social media, Beck's fellow Yardbird and longtime friend, Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, wrote:

The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans. Jeff Beck Rest in Peace.

As a teenager I picked up Blow By Blow and it blew me away. I quickly got Wired and Beck, Bogert & Appice. They were staples on my turntable until I stopped using my turntable. If you're not familiar with his playing, the linked article has a YouTube link to the track Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. It seems everything he did was wonderful, and he never really sought out the limelight.

Had not heard the Jeff Beck version before, thanks for the suggestion. He does a pretty good job with this Mingus tune, trying to make his guitar sound like a languid jazz horn.

Now, listen to the horns on the original, for me this version is much richer, with Mingus playing bass under the horns.

Definitely the better player of the Yardbirds triumvirate, despite Clapton and Page enjoying greater commercial success. I used to get puzzled looks from guitarists for saying that. The proof was "you can do a convincing impersonation of Clapton or Page but try playing like Jeff Beck'". Rhett Shull really nails that sentiment here: https://youtube.com/watch?v=cKfnoMtA0hA [youtube.com]

“It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away,” the statement, which was published by Variety, reads. “He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us. His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and try to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers.”

    - Rocker David Crosby from Crosby, Stills & Nash Dead at 81 [breitbart.com]

Used to store stuff right next to Crosby and Stills. There they would be, doing guy stuff, playing with motorcycles and an old pickup truck. And Crosby would stare, like, "Okay, you gonna recognize me, or not?" Dunno, maybe it was reverence, but you just smile and give 'em their space. Yeah, they looked like album covers... album covers sure looked scruffy, back then.

    Teach your children well.

A middle school music teacher (late 60's) broke out of a rut of playing us show tunes and European classical...by playing the Byrds one day. I don't know what happened to that teacher, but he really opened my ears.

Not all that much later, we about wore out a copy of the CSNY live album, Four Way Street, still nice listen to after all these years.

Well it appears that you were wrong again. It is a site for English speaking people from all over the world. We have community members from Europe, Australasia, India, Canada, Africa, South America and elsewhere too. The staff over the last 9 years or so has been equally diverse and remains so today. It happens that we are hosted in the USA but that could change if we felt that the aims and ethos of the site were being compromised by US law and we found somewhere better suited to us.

Pretty sad, get a grip and do some self reflection about why you tolerate fascism but not an annoying user that lightly teases you. Pretty sad for an older gent that should have matured past this, maybe it indicates a latent immaturity that accompanies so many boomers? Discussions seem a little calmer, but now just mcgrew and a few others trying to maintain sanity.
