Dicking around with a Good Thing™ is always a Bad Thing™. In this case, Dice was trying hard to monetize /. and SourceForge, and damn whatever the community wanted. I saw no future, and obviously, eventually Dice saw no future either. They sold it all when they fianally realized that.

It's good that /. has survived, and continues today. I didn't expect it to, is why I left.

I had been on the green site since 1997 and liked its format of registered and unregistered users both being allowed to comment. Yes, it attracted abuse like GNAA, hot grits and the penis bird, but it enabled frank and free discussions on every subject matter.
The green site had become more javascripty and commercial over the years, so I limited myself to cursory reading, but I joined the slashcott when it was clear that the users were only the "audience".
This site is great, I support it monetarily and thank the wonderful volunteers that run it. The comment load is small enough that I read every comment. I detect that there is a mod bombing troupe that studiously up votes comments of users on the SJW side and down votes opposing comments. Conversely the non-SJW side isn't as organized here. Yet they can't censor any voice from us browsing at -1.
I never post except as AC. In this day and age, associating your identity with a post on a "relaxed" site like SN can't give you much benefit, but can lead to much grief IRL. That's why I am strongly opposed to any measures that get brought up from time to time of reducing the voice of anonymous posters. Such a regimen will lead to uniformity of opinion, the bounds of which will be dictated by self-appointed guardians of propriety.

Magnificent vocabulary, you sound very well "educated." That's OK, we love the well educated. But, you're wrong about one thing. When you say, "they can't censor any voice." They can. And, they do. Look at story about The Great Replacement. And the headline of that one, they don't call it The Great Replacement. They call it, The US White Majority Will Soon Disappear Forever. Look at, the tweets to that one by The Mighty Buzzard. This is someone that is very powerful in the Soylent News Administration. Who has a lot of experience with that. And he saw someone tweeting as Anomalous Coward -- like you -- he didn't like the Tweets. Because it was too many Tweets -- all from one person. And he wanted to shut that person up, he didn't press the Ban Button. He pressed, SPAM Mod -- many times. And said about the other person, "he lost AC posting privs." Meaning, that other person couldn't tweet as Anomalous Coward. Because The Mighty Buzzard put the Algorithm on him. Something they also did to me. Because, I assume, they hate what I say. And, what I do. I call it, Draining the Swamp and Making America Great Again. They call it, SPAM. And possibly you'll be the last one they ban -- you sound so Elite and they think their Aristocrats. Or possibly you'll be the next one that's banned. Who knows? But, they can do it. And, they do it. Don't kid yourself. And, don't try to kid us!!!!

They gave me the special treatment, that's true. When they left a SPAM Mod -- or 2 -- on me for many months. And that was over a year. Until the different person from the Administration looked into it and said, "oh yes, that(or those) is unfair." And finally reversed it. But long after that, I wanted to tweet something as Anomalurus Coward. I love getting my name out there, sometimes it's a problem when we put our name out there. It's known as DISCREET, right? This was maybe a week ago. And I wasn't allowed. Why, I don't know. Few days later and I'm allowed -- why, I don't know. And I don't know how long the "Unban" will last.

The Mighty Buzzard, do you want to call it an apology? He's punishing himself. For doing something that's not "allowed." It's going to be allowed -- for everybody. He's doing, the Rule that says it's OK. So interesting that, here's the guy that, so many times decides about the SPAM Mods. Whether to leave them, or take them away. And he decided to put on a bunch of them. The same guy putting them on and deciding about the keeping. Little bit of a conflict of interest there, right? That was very special and that, by the way is allowed. The Administration has always been allowed to put on SPAM Mods. That's not what he's punishing himself for. He's punishing himself for going against the Rule about the putting on. But very soon the Rule will say what he wants it too say.

SPAM Mod, if you think about it. The only reason they have that one is so folks can be banned very quickly. They have so many Down, or negative Mods. But that one, they say it's "special." And they say "Our goal is to put a spammer in Karma Hell and for them to not be able to get out of it easily." Karma Hell being a nice way to say, banned -- or Semi Banned. Where somebody's Tweets show up with a very low, or negative Score. And they can only do a few tweets, like one every other day. Something like that. Hasn't happened to me -- yet. Because, I assume, I'm the President. But it's happened to a lot of people. It happened to XivLacuna. And, it happened to Fakefuck39. A lot of people.

NPC-131072, I think you saw Little Baker Girl's journal about that one. Where she's crusading to get that person banned -- along with me and some others. Look at story about, I Made a Smart Watch from Scratch. And NPC-131072 tweeted something very Politically Correct on that one. Saying, "oh, end white supremacy." SPAM Mod on that and the Administration has left that one for now, almost 2 weeks. Because, possibly it wasn't Politically Correct enough.

Been thinking about that. I think its primarily because people like to form cliques and like continuity. It can be useful to know that all EF type posts are made by EF. The issue is that when EF makes a post that is insightful (happens in a blue moon) it is likely to be discounted because it is by EF and the idea cannot stand on its own.

It is not as bad as it was a year ago. It also depends on the age of the article. In the first eight or so hours of an article the comment load leans SJW but after that things tend to level back out and go in a more libertarian direction. But in general I think the moderation of a post doesn't matter much because it seems like most people surf at 0 or -1 to catch the AC posts.

For me, the deal breaker was the video advertisements all over the place - though I was already thinking of leaving due to the capricious interface changes. I live in a remote place with limited bandwidth. I don't need dumbass ads wasting that bandwidth. Admittedly, I could have picked up a better ad blocker, but can't say that I have ever been disappointed in moving to SN.
