An open question.

What could/should be done to prevent these shenanigans in the future?

----

Your question is why I wrote this book and wrote here all of last year, so it is ironic to to me anyone even needs to ask.
https://jmichaelhudson.net/rated-soylent-comments/ [jmichaelhudson.net]
https://archive.is/FHpOa [archive.is]

And I also wrote essays and put them into a book:
https://leanpub.com/mentalselfdefense [leanpub.com]

This will warn and instruct all civilians on the depth and sophistication of efforts by various state and corporate actors to infiltrate and disintegrate all effective civilian organizations, while using their remaining air of legitimacy, even in the obvious absence of it, to endorse other tyrannical measures.

Read my comments here: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/44gq/saidit_has_the_chance_to_become_a_free_speech/ [saidit.net]

That is the way forward, I have been saying this for nearly 20 years and I am not changing my tune, everything has only further proven I was right when I got my degree in 2001. We need to accept that mediation and moderation and administration of forums is at this point not a hobby or volunteer effort, but legitimate, necessary-for-survival element of human governance, and recognize that this costs money.

Also that the people who have a billion dollars to ruin .org clearly have too much money they do not deserve, so the money is there, we just need to move it to where it will solve problems rather than create them(or build the entire internet into a tyrannical control mechanism for a tiny handful of https://archive.is/2MFbn [archive.is] to turn the world into an even worse place.

Roberts rules of order need to be updated, digitized, and secured, as do voting, or the internet is going to plunge us into a regressive dark age, which is really what is being threatened at the moment. And what spooky silver spoon jackasses like erik brooks either do not understand, or understand all too well.

I mean, he should a strong background to grasp these concepts after managing children's musical concerts, right? /s

Or you can consider the ideas of someone like myself, who was talking about this at the very beginning when people thought it would all just sort itself out somehow and we would never face a scenario where the entire world could not figure out who to trust on the matter of a pandemic.

(and the greatest enabler of computer viruses was for some reason suddenly the global authority on biological viruses...)

Meanwhile the most popular *dialogue* in the history of the world got 1 million live views for a simple conversation, and the most famous internet company is outright censoring the participants without even have to justify their actions.

And you will also notice archive.is came under attack this week for daring to make things that cannot be censored.

You tell me how far we have come, but to me it looks like backwards.

When you get stuck, you have to question your assumptions. And the entire premise of your question is just that, so maybe you should consider the ideas of people like me who have been singing the same tune from the beginning and saw all of this coming.

        I believe in objective reality.

What I find difficult to believe is that there are non-shill user accounts remaining on the internet, but I am holding onto my faith.

      Fair question lol.

I think it is after all a sign of sanity and good humor to be able to respond to allegations that your brain is malfunctioning, up to a point(that some on this site clearly go far beyond...)

What you consider the center is likely an illusion, and as that illusion crumbles(and it is crumbling, finally) the actual center becomes apparent and suddenly the solutions that were discarded without thought ten(in this case 20) years ago suddenly start to seem sensible compared to the solutions offered by those who are now revealed to be charlatans, with no solutions. (other than maybe to chip you with a mystery vax for a mystery bug and offer you a 20% loan for the privilege)

This is what happens when you follow reason and the best ideas rather than what is on the tv, for a time you are considered a loon, but then eventually people have no choice but to see the light.

Thus has it ever been. That is why you have to have balls, and not shrink away when people call you names and repeat failed ideas over and over, and have some hope and trust in your beliefs, so you are not a lemming feather in the hurricane of bullshit.

A better illustration of this concept may be difficult to find, thank you for noticing my demonstration.

What I've discovered is that memories change with experience. So the ideas that you discarded ten or, in my case fifty, years ago can seem quite reasonable now because they are no longer the same ideas. They have been refined.

This is to an extent true, the book I wrote on this subject was unrefined and now my ideas are refined.

But the main idea was correct and the people who told me that idea is not worth exploring were very wrong.

I said shills would take over if moderation was not respected as work, and the means to make this respected work were not created.

Could I have said it as well then, no. Because I was 25 and hadnt written so many million words.

Imagine a reddit where shills could not exist, I can.

Not that a reddit with shills, and many of them, would not exist, that is inevitable, but a major league forum for argument between real people without interference is what is still needed, anyone who says otherwise is a billionaire trying to implement you in their control mechanism.

What could/should be done to prevent these shenanigans in the future?

As I wrote in reply, decentralize DNS. Not my idea (seen discussion of it in somebody's journal which I can't find), but it works. .org would no longer be a massive food source for a would-be rent-seeker, if a lot of parties were splitting the pie. Presently, since ICANN is the sole controlling entity, it'll continue to be a huge target for these games.

And how am I supposed to tell my bank from another website? What about advertisements? I can't tell my neighbor to go to SN if there is not soylentnews.org but https://1082774087r8ffas9d078709fodfh.50798709s87fxvuhofhowueho4h/ instead. Or Google, Reddit, and Facebook decide to blacklist all links to a location, basically your gone for most of the internet in that case.

And security doesn't matter? What? Without security, you can't be sure that a name sends you where it is supposed to. A bad actor poisons your cache, you are screwed without some security measure. Or a compromised network, etc. Security is the only thing that allows you to trust the name resolution at all!

or their security against malicious actors?

How secure is present day DNS again? You already don't know if DNS is connecting you to the right party for various reasons.

And human-meaningful names still would happen, they just wouldn't be dished out by a central authority which could dish out Ethos-style rent seeking monopolies.

With DNSSEC, short of a root compromise of some form, you can know if DNS is connecting you to the right party. Although, you are assuming a root compromise so that doesn't really matter.

Human-meaningful names will not happen. It is technically impossible to do so because there is no way to guarantee the uniqueness of the name. TOR, I2P, Freenet and others have all tried various solutions and each made different tradeoffs. But you literally cannot have human-meaningful names, security from malicious actors, and decentralization simultaneously. The more of one you have, the less of the others you can have.

Man it is nice when people just come in and want to say constructive things to the discussion. So nice, how hard was that?

Exaeta is who you are talking about with this apostrophe addition to all urls.

It sounds like a nice hack but it would be an impossible sell on the public who is locked into this.

That is what is so pernicious and even devlish about the .org power grab, it is at a level of the internet that only about 1% of people even know exists.

So that fraction of the 1% that cares are fighting a billion dollars of pressure with no public support or awareness, and if we try to explain we get glazed eyes, and the same would happen if we tried to switch everyone to the new dns or add the apostrophe.

This is sadly an argument that a technocracy is inevitable, which is what ethos and thrive "capital" corruptly and opaquely and misleadingly represent, but I am holding out that there is a way for the non-devlish people to represent the public, but we have to morph the internet into something that replaces CNN, which if you have been watching closely, I have been doing at my static site, and here, and saidit, twitter, voat, minds, leanpub, and my vast collection now at archive.is.(which they have started to see as a threat if you have been paying attention)

But if you have the guts to wade through the garbage and traps to find the gems, /pol anons are also kicking ass. I havent laughed in a month I think and I laughed my ass off there last night. And found a lot of truth, good writing, pro memes....

They pushed this thing through over universal criticism for six months (and who knows how long they were working on it before that) with at least a billion dollars involved. I don't think they're finished when they can smell this much money. And if there's any US intelligence or law enforcement involved, this scheming could go on for decades.
