Indie Cop Game Unrecord Looks So Stunningly Realistic Its Gameplay Trailer Is Freaky

Every now and again, an indie game developer comes out of nowhere with a concept trailer or demo that looks too good to be true, prompting skeptics to investigate and shoot down the promising project with harsh reality. We sure hope that doesn't happen with the just-revealed Unrecord, because it's one of the first games we've ever seen with legitimately convincing realism to its graphics.

Foda C, a platinum-selling French rapper, has partnered up with an amateur Unreal Engine developer Alexandre Spindler (@esankiy on Twitter) to form Studio DRAMA. The new indie game studio is already hard at work on its first title, Unrecord. It's a tactical first-person shooter where you play as a police officer, but the game's perspective is uniquely presented in an immersive fashion with almost no HUD elements, just as if it were bodycam footage.

Unrecord - Official Early Gameplay Trailer

Watch the short trailer on YouTube (embedded above) before you keep reading; it's only a couple of minutes long, and it consists entirely of what DRAMA claims is live mouse-and-keyboard gameplay capture footage. The image quality is incredible, and many people have commented that they believe it to be full-motion video footage or a pre-rendered cinematic.

DRAMA is adamant that the gameplay is authentic, though. The developer released a post-reveal FAQ on the game's Steam store page that responds to some of the questions and comments that gamers have had since the reveal yesterday. In the FAQ, the developer states unequivocally that Unrecord is not a VR game, and it is fully-interactive, not a pre-rendered demo. It uses Unreal Engine 5, and appears to make use of the bleeding-edge graphics technology available in Epic's engine.

The developer also addresses the question of whether the game has a pro- or anti-police message in a succinct and distinctly-French way: "Art cannot fight against interpretation." The developers acknowledge that some people may feel disgusted or disturbed by the game's violence, but state that it will avoid topics like discrimination and racism while providing an unbiased take on "criminal acts and police violence."

Skyrim Fan Remakes Whiterun In Unreal Engine 5 And It’s Amazing

The first two Elder Scrolls games made heavy use of procedural generation resulting in a lot of extremely samey environments, but ever since Bethesda abandoned that technique in favor of detailed hand-crafted locales with TES3: Morrowind, they've had a much smaller scale to the world and settlements than the intended "reality" of the fictional world of Tamriel, all due to the limitations of hardware and storage space.

But what if we could see Skyrim as it would "really" be if it were an actual place? That's the concept behind the latest Unreal Engine 5-based remake, created by professional environment artist Leo Torres in his free time over the course of a month. This demo isn't playable, of course; it's really more of a tech demo than anything.

[...] The artist worked off historical sources for population numbers in medieval Scandinavia to come up with a population figure of between 9,000 and 12,000 people for the hold of Whiterun. He says that he initially thought it could be as high as 30,000 but figured that Skyrim's harsh climate as well as the constant conflicts and bandit attacks would keep population figures lower.

[...] The True Scale of Whiterun: Skyrim in UNREAL ENGINE 5!

Seems to be a lot of shooting in this game. I can see it now. Lieutenant Puff: "Officer Khallow, we appreciate your zeal in apprehending criminals, but could you take it down a notch? We're now well ahead of Chicago in our shooting deaths statistics and the optics look problematic."

While PC gaming is huge, the audience just isn't there for AAA developers to target the PC exclusively with releases that have the kind of budget something like this would require. Still, the future looks bright for open world games. Here's looking forward to TES 6!

Urgh. It's always the consoles, isn't it? I doubt I'll ever play TES 6 by the way now M$ own it.

Considering what was happening at Bethesda before M$ bought it, such as the Fallout 76 debacle, and their history of buggy releases in general (even beloved games like Skyrim), I could see M$ ownership being an improvement. Starfield [wikipedia.org] can be the test case before TES VI is rolled out. If you're just an M$ holdout in general, check yourself or try to pirate the game.

I don't really agree with that article's conclusion. The current PS5 and XSX consoles are more powerful than the majority of gaming PCs being used. They've already addressed their greatest weakness by switching directly from HDDs to NVMe SSDs. Minimum requirements are creeping up right now, but not really exceeding the consoles. In some cases recommended RAM will be high to address inefficiencies in PCs vs. the predictable performance and hardware accelerators of the consoles.

PC games are designed to target hardware as weak as they can get away with, and can scale to look better on more powerful hardware. Maybe the CPU and RAM are somewhat less flexible, but a wide range of GPUs could be supported. Because some will be running the game at 4K 100-120 FPS, and some at 720p 30-60 FPS (Steam Deck 1).

For open world games, SSDs are becoming a mandatory specification which will have huge effects. AI will amplify the amount of work designers can do, making 1:1 cities more plausible. Maybe the weak link is the CPU needed to control 100x more NPCs at once. The 8-core consoles are powerful, but we are looking at ubiquitous 16-cores and large caches by the time a PS6/Xb?x launch:

I got Fallout 76 as part of my Humble Bundle subscription. While I've not played it a ton, that may be telling in it's own right. It's definitely chock-full of micro-transactions and has an MMO style subscription service. You can play it without paying anything into the game, beyond the initial purchase price. You'll just eventually feel the squeeze. If you look for it, you will be able to find X/Y/Z game mechanics that are directly affected by the subscriptions and micro-transactions. It could be fun with friends, if you have some to play with. I couldn't even get my steam buddies interested by offering to pay for their initial copy of the game. It could be fun with friends, though. By yourself, it's a definitively worse experience than Fallout 4. In the event that you're looking for more Fallout and are already bored with Fallout 4, it might be worth a shot. So far, the quests are interesting and could be worth at least a playthrough. Fallout 76 is essentially the anti-clepto version of Fallout, because you are very limited on the space you get to use. I figured out real quick that I needed to scrap things, bundle scraps together, etc. to save space. There's a bunch of junk you don't need / can't use and the really useful stuff is pretty scarce.

I've been told that Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is surprisingly popular.

If MMOs filled with mindless transactions can help finance quality single-players titles for the same franchises, then great. ESO also has little to no effect on the overall story of the series because it's set in the distant past.

At best we're going to get Fallout 5 in 2025, which will have been a decade since Fallout 4 was released. Certainly better than Warcraft 4ever. World of Warcraft was released in 2004, nearly 2 decades ago and the rest of the rest is history. At this point, I don't think anyone would even want a Warcraft 4 as the Warcraft games were very much an RTS, with WoW being a major shift from that. Also, comparatively, WoW prints money like the rest of the series couldn't even dream. In the event that Fallout 76 ends up being the online version and the single-player fallout series continues to develop, it's not such a big deal. Considering they're making Starfield and have actual plans for TES6 and F5, they seem to actually want to continue to develop their fan base and make RPGs. Whereas Blizzard has repeatedly beat the dead horse they rode in on. They just don't know it's dead, yet. I say that, but Blizzard could turn things around eventually, they certainly have enough money.
