My summary of the first 2 minutes:
He hopes he never has to make "drama videos" like this. He has (some) history with Stallman. This move is a slap in the face. RMS has been a net negative to the FOSS movement, and a major enabler of toxicity and unpleasantness in general. There's a long history of RMS mistreating women or making really derogatory comments. Why is this someone we are celebrating? He might have done some good things, but doing one good thing does not excuse you from social responsibility for the rest of your life. NCommander "experienced RMS" when he used to volunteer at FSF Savannah and GNU Hurd. A lot of us in free software have had to work around him and the views of the FSF because it's like dealing with a cult.
Other points:
* "There's this ongoing notion that if you're not a white engineer, who is likely an asshole, then you have no place in belonging. This is what a lot people refer to as the techbro community. Basically, it's this small subset of elitist garbage that writes off what everyone else has to contribute. I'm sick of it. A lot of people are sick of it. I fully support the Diana Initiative, and we need more things like that to get women in tech and break down these barriers to get rid of the toxicity, and when RMS got canned, it was a good thing. Because we got rid of someone who actively was supporting harassment and abuse, going back 30+ years."
* The announcement was timed so that LibrePlanet attendees couldn't back out.
* 2005-2006, NCommander was starting to become a programmer. He got involved with Savannah, a SourceForge alternative. He helped modernize it to run on PHP4 and some other stuff. He was accepted as an administrator. While they were forming a roadmap, RMS unsolicitedly barged his way into the conversation and told them to throw everything out and switch to GForge. They tried to explain to him multiple times that "we've got this all sorted, there's no major issues here", and RMS took a giant dump on all their efforts. That was NC's first "why am I doing this?" moment.
* In 2007, NC got involved with Hurd. He never expected it to go anywhere but he was interested in operating system design at the time. Being involved with Hurd development got him involved/interacting with other FSF guys.
* Proprietary is bad mindset, suck it up and deal with missing functionality. FSF distanced itself from Debian for "making non-free software too easy to install".
* Ideology tops all, and it all comes from RMS. No exceptions or justifiable cause. If you can't deal with it, that's your fault and you are to blame. People excuse it because they think the FSF should take a hard line on these stances. But there's no need to shame people who need to use proprietary software. The attitude irked NCommander. The toxicity goes all the way down (from Stallman). gcc and glibc have a long history of difficult maintainers who were impossible to work with. FSF only consented to making changes to avoid losing control to forks.
* Most projects have a Code of Conduct. The FSF does not. It looks like an antiquated dinosaur compared to many other projects. "Follow the party line or nothing" mindset made NC jump ship to Ubuntu and later ended up becoming employed at Canonical.
* There's a cult-like mindset. RMS had a set of requirement for how his computer would be set up. There is an entire team called "RMS Assist". Stallman's computer usage list. RMS stopped using and denounced One Laptop Per Child for possibly being able to run Windows, even though that was impractical/not happening.
* You're telling anyone who cannot submit to this that they're in sin or less than human. NC warned people about RMS for many years. The few times that NC had to be involved with the FSF, he generally did so through an intermediary, to not waste his time or sanity.
* Linux ecosystem is built on GNU projects. You're dealing with a toxic environment. You have to submit to RMS's view of the world or GTFO. Not good for inclusion or anything beyond a small echo chamber. NC and others don't want to be involved with the FSF.
* A lot of us were happy when RMS got canned, hoping that this would lead to change. For RMS to be brought back is basically "HA HA, FUCK YOU". Denouncing the FSF and RMS in general is the bare minimum of what NC can do.
* RMS implied that people with Down syndrome, and possibly anybody with a handicap or mental disability are subhuman. Why is this someone we want in a leadership position? Does creating one good thing really make you immune from criticism? Does it mean you should be at the forefront?
* What's the point of having a platform (NCommander's YouTube channel) if you can't make things better?
* Do your own research, don't just take his word for it. Check out the links in the description.

So, back when I was in high school, so this was probably 2005 to 2006, I was a really big believer in free and open source software. And I was just starting to come into my own as a programmer, learning how to code. And I started getting involved in what was known as Savannah. Savannah was the Free Software Foundation's version of SourceForge. It was kind of an alternative to SourceForge, with more stringent guidelines but greater services. And it seemed like a good place to get started because I could meet people, build my skills, and make a positive contribution.Now, Savannah had had some internal issues before I had gone there, primarily relating to software development and building the platform. It was built on the same source code as SourceForge.net was at the time, but it was a fork of that codebase, and development had stalled out for multiple reasons. So one of the first things I did was help modernize that code to make it run on the then current PHP4, implement some stuff relating to trackers, and helping go through project reviews and submissions. So it was mostly administrative stuff, but it was my first real introduction to this world, on more than just reading a Slashdot article. So I was accepted as the(?) Savannah administrator. I actually had root access to both it and administrative powers on the Savannah portal. So while we're discussing this, we began getting a roadmap together of what Savannah would get and its underlying software, which was Savane. And, basically unsolicited, Stallman kind of barged his way into this conversation. Stallman had basically been under the impression that Savannah was unmaintained, and everything we were doing we should just throw out and switch to GForge, which was another open source fork of the SourceForge.net software. And we basically tried to explain to him multiple times that, "no we've got this all sorted, we've got this plan, there's no major issues here". And RMS basically took a giant dump on all our efforts. I mean, I remember this conversation pretty distinctly.
Unfortunately, it was on a combination of both the private Savannah mailing list and the fence post mailing lists, so I can't produce the article(?). But it was basically, you know, you took RMS's opinion or you took a hike. And that was my first real, you know, "why am I doing this?" moment. It wasn't enough to completely discourage me from being involved with the Free Software Foundation or open source projects in general. But it left a really bad impression and I did end up leaving the Savannah administrators not too long after that partially due to that incident.
So later down the line, in about 2007, I started getting involved with the Hurd project...

I don't know NC, so this is hearsay to me, but I am surprised and saddened to hear he is "woke".
I am also glad that the forces of wokeness have suffered a setback with the FSF. May give them a G extra this year.

Just to be clear, since I do run into this quite often, for some reason, what is the maximum "deucebaggery quotient" that is allowed on this site? I checked all the pertinent documentation, and can find no specification. So I can only assume it is a "Buzzard's butthurt" filter. No one has any idea what triggers the filter. NCommander is obviously a smart guy, but I couldn't help thinking this article and all its comments were satire. I double and triple-checked it all and am still not sure. Maybe I'm just dumb. Here's a few points I'm not sure of:
Say what? You racist muthafucka. I guess Whites had to be demonized somehow, given that they're not known for rioting and twerking. Trying to cripple the carp before feeding them to the eels, I guess.
And in turn creating an even more toxic environment, especially when trannies are involved. One cannot complain about RMS barging in and changing stuff "or else" without acknowledging the even bigger problem of woke women and trannies implementing their reign of terror on all projects they manage to infest.
Non-quote note: I've been saying over and over again that the period of 2005-2007 was probably the most important period of time for Linux, as it had the chance to overtake and beat Windows for desktop domination. Canonical was at the forefront of this with Ubuntu. For reasons I don't know (other than their Ugly Mac-style UI makeover), Canonical really screwed the pooch on this one. If they would have simply stayed their course, perhaps they would have been big enough to get some serious game and application developers onboard in the next few years. But the question is, did hardcore Linux nerds really want Linux to mainstream?
That might have been a good idea back when codes of conduct were more sensible, now they pretty much enable cultures of fear with "you can be cancelled for anything at anytime if some tranny doesn't like the color of your tie." Surely lots of modern projects have lots of junk commits with comments like, "The word 'master' is racist, please remove it" or "bit banging is insensitive to victims of assault" or some shit.
I was never a big fan of RMS. He looks and smells like a slob and behaves like a cult leader. He's that one buddy of yours who never gave up his college-dorm mindset, or that rude stinky Indian boss with no sense of self-awareness. Wrapping up before this comment gets too repetitive, what you are replacing RMS and his ilk with is a cure that's worse than the disease. Woke bullshit successfully fractured Occupy Wall Street, and it is doing a bang-up job in fracturing projects that have become exercises in thought policing rather than coding and arguments about unrelated bullshit rather than collaborating to solve problems.

RMS actually does smell bad, and he actually is a communist. (to be fair this info is from 1995 though) Other shameful things are his insistence on "GNU/Linux", but not "X/BSD/Hurd" of course. Oh, and LISP is a nasty language that makes things unmaintainable and slow.
NC wigged out on an interview. He seems to have bombed it on purpose. He was a perfect match technically, so there was no excuse for bombing the interview as badly as he did. It's clear why. He had misgivings about working for a government contractor involved in cyberwar. He should have declined to go on the interview trip, but didn't.
I appreciate SoylentNews, obviously, but I think RMS did far more for the world than NC.
In the transcript, NC comes off as a toxic SJW who needs to die in a fire. People who bring up racism and sexism are usually overcompensating for their own racism and sexism. Why notice or mention "white engineer" at all? Fundamentally, the Diana Initiative is sexist. Why is it that "we need more things like that to get women in tech"? Does everybody have to want to be in tech? Are women just men with vaginas? NC might share some thinking with RMS there, LOL.
I refuse to be involved in any project with a Code of Conduct. (and yes, it matters, because I can do kernel development) Those are weapons for toxic people. Commonly, non-contributors use them to toss productive contributors and even founders out of projects. The usual CoC is packed full of leftist hogwash. While claiming to support "diversity", it allows for no diversity of opinion on that so-called diversity. It discriminates against the right, particularly the Christian right and the pro-Western nationalist right. The very word "diversity" is absurdly misused. It's the portion that is not white cis-male, not the entropy of the attributes.

Fuck no, I'm not going to be involved in the spread of Windows around the world. To be fair I had other complaints, particularly about charging Americans over double the price. I saw that moment as the beginning of the end of the project. Doubling the cost of the hardware for no benefit whatsoever* is exactly the kind of bullshit that led to the XO-2 fiasco. Negroponte is a great salesman but putting him in charge was a huge mistake. He's never been right, he doesn't listen, and his idiocy has since driven out all of the brilliant developers that created the XO-1.
*I don't care if hardware can run proprietary software if that is the user's choice, but Windows and low cost hardware are anathema and XO-1 was an exercise in cost cutting without losing quality. Windows support was a very stupid decision.

No. I think we could see the FSF completely put in the ground as early as this week. No need to make another GPL since it probably doesn't need the FSF's webpages/existence to be binding, or projects can use another license or write their own. A Google-controlled organization will fork everything of value. Everyone still attached to FSF will be shitcanned and sent to the gutter to die.

Nah, I just felt like sharing it. I posted one other journal about NCommander's channel before. This video popped up in my recommendations and I saw the RMS story in the pipeline so I decided to post it. Might as well since it could be his LAST VIDEO.
I don't agree with the calls to cancel TAHXIC [youtube.com] RMS, but I would not be surprised to see the Free Software Foundation being absolutely crushed into oblivion over this. The world would adapt to that in about a week or two, probably with more complete Google control over OPEN SORES.

RMS is funny as an ogre, but NC sounds like a flake. One aspect of being a man is an ability to receive even unexpected hits without freaking, crying and complaining.
In a pack of strong, personal attacks like these could be just stress tests. This is quite common in military (sergeant-ing), but I have met corpo bosses who promoted to project leadership selectively not by just technical skills, but by self control skills under unfounded attacks. A probe for ability to keep cold thinking under crises situations. It's the kind of strengths which brew authority for the rest of collective. And often saves the day when real trouble comes.
What NC actually describes, is how he failed to defend his logical position in the problem situation. NC's problem is not RMS, but NC himself.
Trying to solve psychological problems with bureaucratic means (CoC) is a paradigm mismatch. Wastes mental energy and time.
Concerning girls in software, the best coders I ever knew were girls. Diligence, was often their virtue. It's like embroidery needlework.

It's profoundly stupid thing to do in a volunteer organization. Both the military and business worlds have something going for them so that both the people being stress-tested are likely to stay and important enough that a stress-test is a necessary evil. But in free software nobody has to put up with this shit. Nor is software improved by the "stress test". It's completely meaningless to whether good code gets produced.

I'm sorry, but having worked under such an ogre, I recognize a lot in NC's statements. The only way to deal with toxic situations like that is to keep your distance, whether you are the direct target of the abuse or not. It causes unnecessary stress, increasing the risk for either burn-out or bore-out, and makes "being passionate about your job" a hazardous state to be in.

What I think TFS is trying to say is that:
The GPL is enforceable, and it makes it difficult for corporations to profit off your work. Corporations don't like that and believe you should consider licensing your code MIT or BSD so that they can profit off your work and never pay you a dime.

RMS is a Creepy Fucking Old Guy, or CFOG. And, NCommander is part of the Woke Crowd. I don't want to work closely with either of them, I don't want to go out drinking with either of them.
But, in today's world, no one can agree to disagree over anything.
I hope they both continue to contribute to their respective projects. And, I'll use whatever I can, or whatever I want of their contributions. But, fuck 'em both. I'm not buying them drinks or anything.
