As long as I need to write stuff to test the features around here I thought I'd mention that the second week of Slashcott, so you guys get a little more breathing room and Dice gets a better visit from the Ghost of Slashcott future, will run from February 17th, 2014, to February 23rd, 2014.
Don't be there, aloha.

How was it determined that the boycott was "officially extended" ? What announcements are "official" and what are not ? What is/was the effect of the boycott ? How was this determined ? I have also heard that it has ended.....which is true, and which not ?

Interesting question. In reality, the decision is up to you. You're the master of your own destiny!
Although unitron seems like a nice guy and he and I agree on a lot of things, we don't agree on everything. A few days before the boycott, we both posted a lot on Slashdot about the boycott and encouraged everyone to participate. Although I'm not certain, he and I may have been the most vocal about the slashcott and promoting Soylent News within Slashdot. I posted so much that an automatic safety mechanism temporarily banned me for posting too much. (Just a few hours.) During the week of the boycott, he and I were both active with Soylent News and not with Slashdot at all. We both have very strong feelings about what happened with Slashdot and we both know it is bad.
With that said, we lead our own lives and have our own opinions. I don't know why he (and others?) decided to extend the slashcott. There is no official channel for the slashcott. It was just a mass revolt that caught on and we helped fan the flames. I am choosing to honor the 1 week boycott and he wants to have a 2 week boycott. These are our respective decisions. I feel neither is right nor wrong, although unitron may disagree.
As for people going back today to Slashdot, there are two reasons. The first is that the original boycott was (accidentally) 8 days long instead of 7. (Originally written as 10th - 17th.) I decided to honor the 8 day boycott, although others may have decided to go with only 7 days. With that said, I decided to break the slashcott temporarily when Soylent News came online to up-mod a story that someone put on Slashdot. (unitron did the same.) I then went back into boycott mode. (unitron did this also.)
How did he boycott affect slashdot? I don't know. That's part of the reason I want to go back. I want to see the details as to what happened.
How long will unitron really boycott? I don't know. Maybe forever. How long will I go to Slashdot? I don't know. Maybe not that long. I really like what has happened here at Soylent News. I only have a certain amount of time to put into news reading and moderating and I'm not going to waste it.
That's the history (from my perspective). Carve your own destiny and choose your own fate. Will you follow me? unitron? Or do something totally different? Follow your heart for the choice is yours!

I have "looked in" on /. a little, to see what, if anything, is being said about beta, about soylent, and about the Slashcott, and what kind of moderation is or isn't going on in regard to those topics, but from a browser that has no record of my previous "logged in as unitron" visits, and have not commented, or "voted" on anything there, so I consider that I have not been a part of the /. community since the Slashcott began.
Since I'm the one who came up with the name, I figure I'm as "officially" in charge of the Slashcott as anybody is, although since participation is voluntary there's nothing I can do to enforce my "edicts".

Agreed. I really like what's happened so far with Soylent and fully intend to stick with it. For me, Dice went too far when they kept trying to force that beta on people, including me. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't force it to drink.
Long live Soylent News!
