The Tampa Bay Times reports

The green rug displaying a large sheriff's star was placed a few months ago in the lobby of the new $81 million public safety complex, which opened last year.

On [January 13], someone spotted the spelling error and the $500 rug was removed the following day. Pinellas [County] Sheriff Bob Gualtieri's inbox was inundated with emails from people who wanted the "In Dog We Trust" rug [...] Gualtieri announced Thursday that it will be sold in an online auction ending at 4 p.m. [January 21].

The auction began Thursday afternoon and within minutes the bidding had reached $1,000. [...] The auction proceeds will go to Canine Estates, a non-profit formed by three sisters taking care of injured and abandoned dogs in a 4,000-square-foot home in Palm Harbor.

A side note: This is in Largo, FL, where IT guy Dave Richards has had Linux running the city's infrastructure since last century.

When this story first broke and all I read was the headlines, I thought they did it on purpose because they really liked their canine unit.

This story is simply to demonstrate one or more of the following:
      - the negative outcome of outsourcing (they do what they're told, if you're lucky, but don't ask any questions).
      - the subversive atheist subculture that is sabotaging government's refusal to honor the separation of church and state.
      - the dog handling purchasing & procurement for the Largo, FL Sheriff's office pulled another fast one.
      - spellcheck doesn't necessarily catch typos.

...it took months before someone who was in Pinellas County and who is literate
        1) was in the lobby of the Sheriff's Department
        2) noticed the details of rug
        3) saw fit to mention it rather than just let everyone else have a laugh at the expense of the cops

I wonder if it was planned all along. Put it out and see just how long it would be before someone brought it up. Excellent fundraiser.

Anecdote; I only wish I had a physical example of what I am about to say, as it was told to me by a former employee... A major aerospace firm had a phone book cover designed and printed up by an outside design house. They came up with a little pattern that looked like a bunch of businessmen, however if you looked at it another way, it was a pattern of penises. What remains of those phone books is now tightly held and very highly priced.

I'm not sure what the point of Soylent News is. (No, I'm not going to read your manifesto). As far as I can tell, it's for people who love slashdot but wish there weren't so many comments. I tried to do my part (posting more interesting stories, and most are accepted) but it seems easier to take my eyeballs elsewhere.

Sadly, it is because this site likes to lower its standard even lower than what Slashdot (the community, not the company behind) ever was.
This piece of news I would like to read, but not on a scientific site. Its place is in a normal daily news-paper.
