Gay women tend to be exclusively sexually attracted to women, while straight women are more likely to be aroused by both sexes, a study says.

Researchers asked 345 women about their sexual preferences and compared these with their arousal levels when shown videos of attractive men and women.

They found 28% of straight women were mostly aroused by their preferred sex, compared with 68% of gay women.

The University of Essex study concluded that no woman is "totally straight".

I am not normally attracted to other women, but given the right woman in the right circumstance… I have made many innuendos at bars. I even had the hots for one of my apprentices. I do not think these relationships would result in happiness, however, so I did not pursue them.

I even confused a trans man I know when I was in pursuit of another trans man, but that went horribly wrong. We reconciled, a few years later. Well, I reconciled with the one, given that he is the #0 ranked Amazon. (I perhaps should not reveal this, but what the hell, this world is coming to an end.) The other one, I'm not so sure about. I hope his franchise does well.

Let that stand out there as a data point.

I think this doesn't affect guys because we are pretty much hardwired to compete and see fellow males as a threat, after all throughout the animal kingdom the males have to compete for mates and the losers have their line die out whereas with females there isn't a constant struggle so this isn't an issue.

Maybe, but seeing as how there have been well-documented societies where male-male sex was common (e.g. ancient Greece), I think we need to at least question that idea that it's "hardwired". And the animal kingdom? Male apes have been shown to get it on with each other too.

Actually, the opposite was the interesting part of this study.
It showed that gay women had 'arousal' more similar to straight men.

Women were previously shown to have their bodies recognize a wider range of things as being sexual than men, and responding to it, regardless of actual sexual interest. This shows gay women don't respond to as much.

I long ago stopped worrying about what women do, or don't do. Whatever turns them on, or off, at least 98% of all the women I've ever know are (at least outwardly) kind, loving, nurturing people. The ones who are not - well - like men, there are some women who should have been drowned while they were still puppies.

I told my son that at least a hundred times before he moved in with one of those two-legged dogs who would eat her own young.

Some of you will think I exaggerate. I watched the woman take full financial advantage of her son's serious injuries when he was burnt. I watched her fail utterly as a parent after he came home from the hospital, not debriding his wounds, not putting pressure garments on him, not doing any form of physical rehabilitation, not being there at all. Our own son, burnt equally badly, has full use of his arms today, while her son's arms are drawn up like claws, severely limited in motion.

I may be a judgemental old fool, but any parent who doesn't put the rest of his/her life on hold to properly care for a seriously injured child is no parent at all, and unfit to live in society.

Studies like this are trash, because they reach conclusions they cannot possibly justify. It would take only a single example somewhere in the world to prove it wrong, and there are billions of women. If the results of this study are even correct at all (and I am wary of this sort of 'science'), at most they could conclude that it is highly unlikely for a woman to be "totally straight", not that no woman anywhere qualifies.

I don't think they understand what straight is. Straight people have been having same-sex sex for millenia now. That's a completely separate matter from a person's sexual orientation. There's many reasons for it. For example a lack of women, is probably the most obvious. Then there's curiosity and an opportunity to bond.

There comes a point where feelings of attraction towards the opposite or same sex become so minute that there's not any way of knowing that they're even there. For social reasons, I'd wager that it's more likely for women to realize that they're having those kind of feelings than it would be for men. I know I had no idea I was attracted to other men until I realized that I was. As tautological as that is, that's more or less how it worked. Denial is a surprisingly strong force.

I understand that was determined by the Kinseys in the 1950s.

To the extent any but a very few are totally straight or totally gay it's because of society's expectations or their own inability to come to terms with their sexuality.

It's quite common for high school students to be openly gay these days but it was quite rare when I was in high school from 1978-1982.

I myself am openly bisexual however my attraction to men is quite different from my attraction to women. When I meet a woman I am attracted to I commence courting her in hopes that she will accept my offer of marriage then bear my child. With men, I just want to get an anonymous blowjob in a video booth or maybe through a glory hole.

I did finally work up to hanging out at a gay bathhouse, but that's mostly because they have really good wifi, power sockets, free cofee refills and hot showers. So at times I go there late at night, have a shower, get dressed then write code all night long. The two bathhouses I've been to have two sections, one is quite dark and there is man-on-man action there 24/7. The other is brightly lit, I wear my clothes everyone else wears a towel around their waist.

(I came out to the woman who is now my ex-wife very early in our relationship. She just asked me to remain sexually faithful to her. I always was. But when I finally came to terms with our divorce, I tore a huge, loud, wide swath through the sexual community of Silicon Valley, San Francisco and Portland.)
