Dolly Parton secretly produced Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and fans have only just found out:

While Parton was not herself credited as a producer on the long-running fantasy series, a company she co-created and owned was responsible for it coming to television.

Sandollar Entertainment, which is listed on the end credits of every episode of the show, was created by Parton and her friend and former business partner Sandy Gallin in 1986. It produced a number of films, including Father of the Bride (1991) and Fly Away Home (1996), as well as several Parton projects – most recently her Netflix anthology series Dolly Parton's Heartstrings.

It also produced the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, released in 1992 to dismal reviews. It was Gail Berman, then an executive at Sandollar, who still believed there was potential in the property, and proposed launching the concept as a TV series.

If Dolly Parton was involved, it was pretty much guaranteed not to fall flat on its face out of the gate.

So what was her actual involvement in Buffy? From that story, a company she co-founded had someone who was an executive producer in Buffy, but there's no evidence in there that she even knew Buffy existed. Perhaps the reason it's "Parton’s uncredited involvement in Buffy" is because she wasn't involved?

It might be obvious to others who is more up to date than me, but why does Buffy bubble right now in the nerd-o-sphere? Would be nice to know instead of the subliminal influencer stuff to know if something new was on its way. Modern crowdadvertising is annoying as hell, I'd rather get the info straight up so that I can choose "interested", "not interested", instead of being groomed and prepared to be suceptible to a new product.

Not really a reboot, more like "Buffy: TNG." While there are some reasons to worry (namely that all the recycled nerd culture stuff has turned out to be awful), this is its own thing done by different people and should be judged on its own merits. The new showrunner is actually a fan of the original (imagine that!) and while Joss Whedon isn't involved day to day, it's being done with his blessing and advice.

However, I haven't really heard anything about it since 2018. There's no imdb entry or, as far as I can tell, any casting or script. It might be a dead project.

I loved the Buffy movie from the first time I saw it.

It was written by Joss Whedon who later wrote the movie, Firefly, among other films.

I heard that he was very displeased with the Buffy film as he had not intended it to be a satire on the genre. He tried to remedy that in the TV production of it, but I found the TV version took itself far too seriously and hence was no fun to watch.

That Dolly was somewhere behind it all makes perfect sense in retrospect.

Yes, while Joss cheated on his wife many times, please note that that article is an opinion piece, written by a jilted and angry ex.

Writing empowered, strong female characters, and even potentially 'feminist' films and television shows is not 'undone' by a writer sticking his dick in willing females (note, no one has suggested the recipients of his attention weren't willing.)

I guess they could reboot with Dolly in the lead -- show setting, Buffy had a hard life, a massive boobjob and is now "enjoying" retirement at the Sunnydale (I'm sure they rebuilt the town) Slayer retirementhome when ...

      The movie was fun.

The show was fun too, but it made the mistake of taking itself too seriously and by the end I didn't even know why I was watching anymore.

Angel was a decent spinoff while it lasted, but they never really got back to that initial level of fun.

Dolly Parton Secretly Produced Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Fans Have Only Just Found Out

Okay, seems reasonable. I'm a fan of her music and know she does Good Things, so I'll keep reading because I'm interested.

While Parton was not herself credited as a producer on the long-running fantasy series, a company she co-created and owned was responsible for it coming to television.

So... -she- wasn't involved, a company she founded was?

It was Gail Berman, then an executive at Sandollar, who still believed there was potential in the property, and proposed launching the concept as a TV series.

Aha, details at last. So, -Gail Berman- is largely responsible, and used the resources of the production company he/she worked for to make it happen. A company which, incidentally, was/is owned by Dolly Parton.

I skimmed the article looking for details, and was unimpressed. This blurb jumped out at me:

Both Berman and Gallin are credited as executive producers on the Buffy series, along with its spin-off series Angel, though Parton herself is not. She did, however, play a fundamental if often forgotten role in bringing Joss Whedon’s creation to the screen.

I read the whole thing. No where is any light shone on this supposed fundamental role. From the information available, the only reasonable conclusion is that Dolly Parton personally had sweet Fuck All to do with Buffy the vampire slayer, and I defy anyone to prove otherwise. No, seriously. If there's information beyond the attention-whoring-headline article linked in the summery, I'd love to see it.

I mean, if this is the level of informational accuracy we're willing to accept, I might as well submit this story I just found from last february: Bill Gates secretly Saved Minecraft from Notch [venturebeat.com]. Bill Gates started Microsoft, so he's obviously the uncredited mastermind behind the GitHub purchase... right?
