Folding@Home ARM64 Linux Beta Release for COVID-19 Vaccine Research

A few months ago, we reported that Rosetta@Home supported 64-bit Arm SBC's and Servers in the Fight against COVID-19. But Folding@home did not support Arm hardware just yet, but thanks to work from Neocortix, Linaro, Arm, miniNodes, and Packet.com, we now get support for Folding@home on ARM64 meaning you can help researchers studying SARS-CoV-2 virus and help them develop a COVID-19 vaccine with Raspberry Pi 3/4 boards, or other 64-bit Arm SBC's and servers.

I just got my first pi a couple of weeks ago. Now I've got 3, they're like rabbits it seems. I'm wondering if folding would use the available memory in an 8gb pi4. Think I might give this a go...

I only have the 4 GiB, so I would be interested in knowing that.

From my quick look, doesn't look like RAM is a big issue.

I don't think memory will be much of an issue. I just looked at TOP. a7 core is using 1.1% of 32 gig of memory, a22 core is using 1.7%, FAHClient uses 0.7% The a7 core is the one running on CPU, a22 runs on GPU. If you are running short on memory in other applications, FAH could become an issue of course.

I was more wondering if it would take advantage of the memory. I've not come close to running out of 4gb much less 8gb though it's only been a couple of weeks and I'm not doing anything strenuous with the pi. That being said I'm not running a 64bit os though I don't know if that would make much of a difference given the applications I currently have in use. It's been a long time since I've run any variant of linux and my experience with the pi is extremely short, for now. Though I can now control my living room lamp remotely with a pi zero w! Press an icon on my win 10 desktop in my office and the light goes on or off in my living room. Woohoo!

Probably not, unless the ARM clients are very, very different from the AMD64 client. As I mentioned above, system has 32 gig of ram, and it's not using much at all.

I count buffer/cache as part of RAM usage, especially since usage + cache exceeding the limit can push it into using swap on a microSD card. Which I've done at least several times.

Have top and htop open in the background. What looks like 1200 MB RAM usage might be more like 2200 MB (me right now), and so on.

Reminder that using a 32-bit OS on an 8 GiB Pi4 is legit, since the OS can use all of that memory, with up to 3 GiB per process. Just add more browser tabs. I have 9 just for all of the Intel Architecture Day 2020 stories that I need to combine. RIP.

I could've compiled it for ARM64 myself if you had released the source code. As it is, you have not released the source code, so I will not be using your software.

I do find it funny how some of the biggest open source advocates on here are also the ones drumming up support for folding at home.

And don't forget about the proprietary results they don't have to share either.
