China culls 38,000 pigs as swine fever spreads.

More than 38,000 pigs have been culled across China, state media said Sunday, as the world's largest pork producer scrambles to contain an outbreak of African swine fever.

The disease has been discovered in five Chinese provinces, the official Xinhua news service reported, quoting statistics from the country's ministry of agriculture.

China reported its first case of the disease in August in northeast Liaoning province.

Since then the disease has moved south, with cases discovered as far as 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) away, raising concerns it could infect pig farms across the country.

Recall several years ago there was a widespread outbreak of Swine Flu among humans.

The gummint of Egypt got the idea in their heads that human swine flu was being spread by pigs, so they ordered all the pigs in Egypt slaughtered.

Up until their untimely demise, the pigs kept by the Egyptian Copts - one of the oldest Christian sects, and arguably the sect that the Lineage Of Peter should be found in - were eating all the trash that was dumped out on Cairo for them.

Apparently the disease usually has no symptoms in wild species of swine, so it looks like humans' selective breeding of domestic pigs introduced some kind of weakness. I guess that's what happens when you try to screw around with natural selection to optimize for traits that don't serve the species. There's no vaccine, but perhaps the genes that provide resistance to the disease could be identified?

For some reason chefs and food manufacturers presenting vegan food seem to be obsessed with providing these "mock meats". I can see the idea might appeal to someone that enjoys meat but wants to transition to a vegan diet and wants to use them as a sort of temporary meat surrogate. I think there are a lot of fad dieters and hipsters that do the vegan thing now in a casual or temporary way to try and look cool, lose weight, or improve health. My own view is that if you want to become vegan permanently, you're just going to give yourself a hard time if you try and kid yourself these things are like meats. Better to just enjoy foods and their flavors on their own merits. Your palate soon changes. I would almost certainly vomit if I ate meat now. So, for vegans like me, the idea of mock meats is nausea-inducing -- and for meat lovers, they're likely to be a poor imitation. So, yeah, maybe it's better for everyone to just drop the pretense. Lab grown meat will fill the gap.

The real tragedy of people who eat mock meats just to be hipsters is that they're missing things that are so much better.

For example, why screw around with fake hot dogs? That has to be the most disgusting mock meat I've ever tried. Instead, they should grill up some carrots and have carrot dogs. Not totally unlike a hot dog and so delicious, especially with salsa or even just mustard and relish.

flavored to taste like charred animal flesh.

That particular product seems to be "smoke flavored" in the hope that the burned taste will be evocative of burned meats. I don't detect much in the way of animal flavor except indirectly (the product smells almost, but not quite completely, unlike bacon, and scent is an important cue for flavor).

In order to get the right combination of things to make something taste like bacon, an essential step at our current state of the art in food science is still "add bacon."

I do see lots of products with misspelled names ("Sour Creme","Dairy Free Cheezecake") that don't contain anything that the name would seem to indicate, and "Bacn pieces" don't disappoint here, as they contain no bacon bits. Heck, they are certified Kosher. In my opinion, these foodlike products aren't a substitute for food.

      http://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2011-06-21-lab-grown-meat-would-cut-emissions-and-save-energy [ox.ac.uk]

The analysis, carried out by scientists from Oxford University and the University of Amsterdam, also estimates that cultured meat would require 7-45% less energy to produce than the same volume of pork, sheep or beef. It would require more energy to produce than poultry but only a fraction of the land area and water needed to rear chickens.

[...] ‘Cultured meat could potentially be produced with up to 96% lower greenhouse gas emissions, 45% less energy, 99% lower land use, and 96% lower water use than conventional meat.’

Lab grown meat will significantly improve the planet, never mind the needless continued death of animals for generations and generations to come. it'll be like renewable energy -- it'll replace the old methods and still provide the same product we're used to, just differently.
