Rising European life expectancy undermined by obesity: WHO

Life expectancy in Europe continues to increase but obesity and the growing proportion of people who are overweight risks reversing this trend, the World Health Organization warned Wednesday.

In its European Health Report, covering 53 countries in a vast geographical area from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the UN agency found well-being is the highest in the world but varies widely within the region.

Average life expectancy from birth has increased from 76.7 years in 2010 to 77.8 years in 2015. Women continue to live longer than men—81.1 years compared to 74.6 years for men, although the gap has slightly narrowed.

    Its probably people eating too many grains in their food as a meat substitute. Ive got nothing against vegetarianism per se, but that is a problem.

        Never heard of him. I just know running 10 km per day for months did nothing, but cut out grains (meat, vegetables and a bit of fruit is fine) and began eating less (felt satiated easier) within a couple days (also stopped running). Kept it up and lost 2 kg per week for onths. Then I stopped for couple weeks to try grains and felt more cravings, so ate more and the weight loss stopped. It may have even started rising. Now I stopped the grains again, and crave much less food and weight is dropping like before.

        So maybe grains werent always like they are now, or something, but a good rule seems to be avoiding them as much as you can afford to at this point. I never really ate sugary stuff anyway so that wasnt an issue for me.

            A guy I knew lost weight with a meat heavy diet but 1. I dunno how much he kept it up afterwards, 2. he took meat from friends in Slovenia which has a good tradition. Dieting on the average fast food meat sounds like a convoluted long term suicide plan to me.

              The average fast food "meat" isnt meat. It has sugar and other crap added to it. You really just need to just cook your own food to do it. Even salads or dressing will have weird sugar added to it. If you have a fridge, you can cook all the meat and make all the salad you want in a couple hours one day of the week and then be good for the rest.

              If you are going to eat it anyway, it will still be better to eat fast food "meat" without the bread though.

              I didn't eat any fast food, but yeah, it's hard to keep up on a heavy meat diet. I didn't do it for any particular reason other than I wanted to see what would happen. I do eat a lot more meat now than I used to as I was practically a vegetarian before.

          Imagine that! Eating less == less calories == weight loss? WOW!

          Carbs are absorbed faster, that's why you can eat more of them. Your body is better at using carbs than fat. It's like if you eat grass, you'll also lose weight. As for cravings, you can train your stomach to only crave food at some parts of the day. If you stuff yourself all day long, you'll always feel hungry all day long. At least until your stomach is retrained. But replacing carbs with fats and protein is not exactly healthy choice for long term.

          Kind of reminds me why 90+% of people fail at keeping weight off, even if most lose weight initially.

            I dont need to train anything, just not eat bread or rice with my meals or eat any candy/soda crap. Its not even hard, you can eat as much as you want.

            So have fun with your training of the stomach, Ill eat less the easy way.

            The science in recent years has confirmed the benefits of a low carb (keto) diet:
            Better blood lipid profile, lower blood pressure, better insulin sensitivity, better energy levels, less body fat.

            Why do you choose to remain ignorant? We eat too many carbs in industrialized countries. Veggies are good, but look out you don't eat too many grains especially.

          Roman army did not carry flour, they milled the grain with a stone they carried themselves.
          We are much better than them so we grind, probably remove the germ (vitamins) and the bran (fiber), and store the rest in silos who need yearly maintenance. Hope that it is performed.

            The roman soldier was burning enough calories marching and setting up camp, etc so that I doubt eating too much was an issue.

      What a pile of bullshit. Literally. It's EATING TOO FUCKING MUCH that is causing the problem. Maybe you can also point fingers at plastics and similar obesogens as contributors, but don't bullshit about "grains as meat substitute". How stupid do you have to be to believe that shit? Ask your grandma about how life was 80 years ago. or 60 years ago. Or during WW2, when there was NO MEAT and not enough food. Or after WW2, when there was enough food but meat was considered a **luxury**, especially in Eastern Europe. Somehow, people were not fucking fat. Eating all that bread and potatoes and not fucking fat. The only fat people were the people that boozed a lot in addition to eating too much meat.

      Maybe start blaming obesity on refugees next? Has about the same amount of facts as your statement.

        1) Eating grains increases your appetite
        2) People with increased appetite will eat more

        Obviously number two isnt possible unless food is available, so you will not see it leading to obesity in those cases. Every single point in you rant supports what I described entirely.

        Ask yourself this, which comes first: eating or hunger? Its hunger, people eat more than they should because they are hungrier than they should be. So the best way to eat less is to feel less hungry...

      But I will give you one point - coconut cream. That shit is dangerous. I mean, it packs up to about 35% fat and you can easily add in another 25% of fat from melted butter before the taste goes to crap (coconut milk is about 24% fat, and can only hide about 20% of melted butter).

        As explained to the other poster, obviously it doent matter how hungry you are if there is not a bunch of excess food to eat. Anyway, all you people with thoughtless snappy dismissals are just missing out. Its no problem for me.

      Hate to break it to you, but middle east does overlap partially with europe (the european part of turkey, and probably also included greece up until they revolted. middle east might also include cyprus).

      Those studies are all retarded since they never compsre to an actual low carb diet, just amongst various high carb diets. Check if theres a group getting 5-10% of their calories from carbs and ignore it if not.
