Babies wanted: Chinese province may offer a year of maternity leave:

A landlocked province in northwest China, in an effort to encourage couples to have children, is looking to sharply increase the duration of paid maternity leave to nearly one full year, putting it on par with some developed economies in Europe.

Shaanxi is seeking public opinion on allowing an additional half a year of maternity leave on top of the current 168 days. That would put the province in the same league as European nations like Germany or Norway.

Shaanxi is also considering doubling the length of paternity leave to 30 days for couples looking to have a third child.

China announced in May that married couples may have up to three children, after data showed a dramatic decline in births in the world's most populous country.

The decision to let families have up to three children was initially met with doubts on whether it would make much difference. There were also calls for details on what supportive measures would be included.

[...] Since then, 14 provinces including Shaanxi have either amended local family planning rules or are seeking public opinion to make amendments to laws to confer extra maternity or paternity leave.

p...] China had a fertility rate of just 1.3 children per woman in 2020, recent data showed, on par with aging societies like Japan and Italy.

As the saying goes: "You may actually be one-in-a-million. Just remember that means there are 1,446 people in China exactly like you!"

Shoot that's double or quadruple the maternity leave in the US, depending on if it's also the same length for the paternal parent.

China is starting to treat their people better than here. Writing, wall.

According to the BLS, less than 25% of working women have access to paid maternity leave of any length and almost 10% don't even have access to unpaid leave.

And this isn't about China trying to treat their people better. This is about getting more births to support their huge population when they are too old to do it themselves. The problem is that China isn't just dealing with economic issues causing low birth rates. They also have cultural issues slowing it down. As the economic problems get worse, those cultural issues may only be exacerbated even further as things compound.

          If by,

          1. by far fewer, you mean a few percent? Like 10% at birth? Or do you mean their sex ratio for adults is like Norway or Czech Republic? The sex ratio is only skewed for younger demographic where ultrasound was used/available.
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_sex_ratio [wikipedia.org]

          2. by "way in the past", do you mean now?

then maybe with these changes the first part is correct. But I'm even more confused why would China apologize for something that was not even policy? Should US apologize for causing millions of deaths on the road because model-T was created in America? By your logic, yes.

Sex-selective abortion is already banned but technologies such as ultrasound have made it easier to know a baby's gender in advance, increasing the chances for aborting girls. -- 2005

China should do what America is doing and open its borders to immigrants. Soon, every Chinese family could have maids and gardeners who are Pakistani, Indian, and North Korean. It would instantly solve their labor shortage and bring the diversity that has made America so strong for so long.

Over there one gets a few months of fully paid vacation for child care, then up to 3 years of government assisted one with former employment spot guaranteed and up to 6 years of unpaid one. Does not have to be the mother either - anybody who provides the care qualifies. The government also gives outright bulk one time money that could be used for real estate shopping and similar and discount mortgage rates below inflation. Did I mention free healthcare with doctors making home visits the same day?
