The world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator has restarted after a break of more than three years for maintenance, consolidation and upgrade work. Today, 22 April, at 12:16 CEST, two beams of protons circulated in opposite directions around the Large Hadron Collider's 27-kilometre ring at their injection energy of 450 billion electronvolts (450 GeV).
"These beams circulated at injection energy and contained a relatively small number of protons. High-intensity, high-energy collisions are a couple of months away," says the Head of CERN's Beams department, Rhodri Jones. "But first beams represent the successful restart of the accelerator after all the hard work of the long shutdown."
[...] Pilot beams circulated in the LHC for a brief period in October 2021. However, the beams that circulated today mark not only the end of the second long shutdown for the LHC but also the beginning of preparations for four years of physics-data taking, which is expected to start this summer.
[...] This third run of the LHC, called Run 3, will see the machine's experiments collecting data from collisions not only at a record energy but also in unparalleled numbers.[...]
The unprecedented number of collisions will allow international teams of physicists at CERN and across the world to study the Higgs boson in great detail and put the Standard Model of particle physics and its various extensions to the most stringent tests yet.
Other things to look forward to in Run 3 include the operation of two new experiments, FASER and SND@LHC, designed to look for physics beyond the Standard Model; special proton–helium collisions to measure how often the antimatter counterparts of protons are produced in these collisions; and collisions involving oxygen ions that will improve physicists' knowledge of cosmic-ray physics and the quark–gluon plasma, a state of matter that existed shortly after the Big Bang.

How does one detect Dark Matter? I'm imagining you smash particles and look for the stuff that doesn't appear?
I always have to laugh at the folks that are like, "You're going to make a black hole!1!!!" Who cares if one created a black hole that was 1 particle? It would still have the same mass as the particles before you smashed them. It takes energy to absorb another particle. It wouldn't take long to turn that black hole particle back into "normal matter." Hey! Maybe thats it. Dark Matter is the matter created when Black Hole particles change from a black hole particle to a non-black hole particle? I'm gonna make a tik-tok.

FWIW, I'm not convinced it would turn back into a normal particle. I've got this theory that there's a minimal size for a black hole below which it can't absorb particles, so it can't absorb virtual particles, so it can't evaporate (i.e. it can't emit Hawking radiation). But you're right about the mass, which totally destroys the plot of "Thrice upon a time".

I did enjoy that book in college. My roommate turned me on to it.
Then he got me started on Inherit The Stars and the books that followed. I enjoyed that too -- nevermind a planet disintegrating to form the asteroid belt.
In the 80s I enjoyed quite a few of Hogan's books. This got me on to other authors like Clark, Asimov, Pournelle and Niven. In the 90s while reading Norvig's "Paradigms of Artificial Intelligence Programming: Case Studies in Common Lisp", I then found out about Entoverse and much later about The Immortality Option sequel to Code Of The Life Maker.
Wow what a flood of memories from decades ago triggered by one minor reference.

Sort of. Basically you look at all the particles you detect and figure out there's some energy and momentum missing. But it can't be really missing because of conservation of energy and momentum. Thus it must be carried away by something we cannot see. And from how much is missing, under what conditions it is missing, and the properties of the stuff we actually do see, we can then draw conclusions on the properties of the stuff we don't see.

dark matter is stuff you find at the bottom of the ocean.
stuff that is closed, like a discarded plastic bottle with air and cap on, got dragged far enough down, that the volume of displaced water in weight becomes less then the weight of the closed system. a poor-mans blackhole, so to speak.
reminder: iron boats can float, wooo-hoo. even a closed iron boat can "swim" like a u-boat. if you can.plastiquely compress it (all surfaces stay closed and the displacement air stays inside) "too much" (via depth pressure), at a certain point it wlll sink.to bottom.
so, who knows how many plastique crumbled u-boats with air still inside sit at bottom of ocean, weighting (sic) for someone to pull them past "critical depth", so they can unfold back to the surface

Given all the effort that physicists have put into string theory, you'd think they'd use the LHC to put string theory to the test rather than stringently testing the Standard Model.

How would the LHC be used to test string theory?
The fact that we have discovered exactly 0 supersymmetric particles, even at LHC energies, is disastrous for string theory.
The best we can hope for is disproving that no superparticles exist all the way up to the Planck scale, something far beyond the reach of experimental physics today.
So many issues with String theory, like requiring anti-de Sitter space which predicts a cosmological constant of the wrong sign to match our observations of dark energy.
No question the holy grail of unification is what we want, but currently our experimental ability is not available.
