Amidst an ongoing copyright-infringement case between CBS, Paramount and the crowdfunded fan film "Star Trek: Axanar," the two media companies outlined several guidelines for any future Star Trek fan productions.

In an open letter to fans, CBS and Paramount wrote that they want to support and encourage fan creativity. The guidelines also state that the companies "will not object to, or take legal action against, Star Trek fan productions that are nonprofessional and amateur and meet the following guidelines."

Sounds like Justin Lin and J.J. Abrams didn't have enough clout to make the lawsuit "go away" after all...

The fan production must be less than 15 minutes for a single self-contained story, or no more than 2 segments, episodes or parts, not to exceed 30 minutes total, with no additional seasons, episodes, parts, sequels or remakes.

    ...

The fan production must be a real “fan” production, i.e., creators, actors and all other participants must be amateurs, cannot be compensated for their services, and cannot be currently or previously employed on any Star Trek series, films, production of DVDs or with any of CBS or Paramount Pictures' licensees.

That's too bad. A lot of interesting stuff has come out lately. I guess Star Trek is now pretty much dead and over with barring some miracle.

Videos must not include profanity, nudity, obscenity, pornography, depictions of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or any harmful or illegal activity, or any material that is offensive, fraudulent, defamatory, libelous, disparaging, sexually explicit, threatening, hateful, or any other inappropriate content.

Right. Those things are for the JJ-verse only.

    depictions of drugs, alcohol, tobacco

Um...canon Star Trek itself has depictions of alcohol every so often.

Nonsense. In addition to Romulan ale, there's that one episode where Scotty digs out an aged bottle of Scotch and proceeds to drink intergalactic invaders under the table.

You know, that one episode. The one with the Styrofoam dodecahedrons.

I meant that fan films would only be allowed to have synthehol, by the guidelines. No Romulan ale, Klingon blood wine, Saurian brandy, Scotty's "Scotch.. whhhhisky," or even the infamous "it's green" stuff allowed. Who wants to make a fan film in a universe like that?
