Here's an unexpected twist: Palmer Luckey, co-founder of Oculus VR and the creator of the Oculus Rift, recently pledged $2000 per month to the Patreon for the CrossVR project that's developing Revive—the software that enables the use of Oculus-exclusive software of the HTC Vive headset.

[...] Luckey's support of the project could be seen as an amusing finger in the face of the company he founded but left (under under[sic] less-than-ideal circumstances) earlier this year, but as UploadVR reported in February, Oculus head of content Jason Rubin said at the 2017 DICE Summit that Oculus was not doing anything to stop Revive-type hacks from working, and was actually taking steps to enable them to run more effectively.

It will run embedded X-Windows on an Atmel DIP microcontroller and be slow and buggy as fuck while being boxy and beige-colored. After its commercial failure it will be sold for pennies on the dollar to Midway and be a graphical interface into a "drunk simulator" parlor game due to its low-latency and slow framerate of 2 FPS. I hear the next feature will feature involuntary angular rotation* of the display when looking up or down.

      * Angular rotation like this. [youtu.be]

Razer's OSVR headsets run 300-400 dollars with fully open source libraries and design files, unlike the Facebook/HTC projects which cost 2x as much for far more proprietary options.

I sadly haven't had the spare money to purchase one, but Razer sure seems to be playing more to the community than Facebook and company are.

Facebook & Co is all about selling out users that they succeeded to lure in. Users are dumb fucks that trust Suckerberg as one person said.

        Thanks for the info anyway.

(11/4/13): Luckey reached out to Road to VR to clarify. “…I did back CastAR on day one myself… Supporting the VR industry and expanding my collection are both important,” he wrote.

Yes, that is what he says. A lie. You have your link right above in the comment you reply to. Can't you even notice that?

You can check it yourself since that is the list of all the CastAR backers that paid their pledge.

Mr. Luckey is not listed there and never paid the $10,000 pledge he made to CastAR.
Also you may view Palmer Luckey's profile here [kickstarter.com] and see that castAR is not listed either.
It's a short list of just 18 projects he backed so even you won't have excuse to get lost there.

And all his whining about he never got the pledge level he paid for. Well, he never paid anything, what can you expect?

When called on the evidence Mr. Luckey even tried to excuse himself saying that he rather would send a check to Jeri, which of course she never got.

Creator Technical Illusions on May 24 [kickstarter.com] In regards to Palmer Luckey’s backing of the castAR Hand Built Prototypes: As with the policies established by Kickstarter, a backer has 7 days after the conclusion of the campaign to get the payment charged for your pledge amount. Failure to do so will result in the backer being dropped from the campaign and their account being permanently disabled. Palmer was ultimately not able to complete this transaction within the allotted time. As there was never any money exchanged, we are not obligated to supply the pledge level to him. You may view Palmer Luckey’s profile here and see that castAR is not listed as a project he financially backed: https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/437285118 [kickstarter.com]

And they later confirmed it in a live webcast. He never paid.

I backed castAR. They refunded me like 1.5 years later because VC money bought them off.

Seems fair. You paid for it. And still are listed as a CastAR backer, isn't it?

They unfortunately messed up. But fortunately at least in this case you got your money back.

It's a pity though. The VC just played to get bougth by some big fish and lost.
