During an on-air CNN report about how Turkey was stifling dissent on the one-year anniversary of the Taksim Square protests in Istanbul, Turkey proved its point by detaining reporter Ivan Watson in the middle of a broadcast.

Turkey has been making headlines for the Prime Minister's heavy-handed response to social media being used for protest organizing and to expose his own corruption.

where my wife and I have vacationed several times and spent our honeymoon? The country with the kindest people on earth? A country where an entire 8-lane highway along the Sea of Marmara shut down without a single honked horn so my taxi driver could shoo a seagull with an injured wing to safety on the side of the road? I've been lots and lots of places around the world, and Turkey is superlative. Great food, great culture, great entertainment, great beaches, history of all kinds out the yin-yang, and on and on. It is very hard to imagine how this sort of thing could be happening in such a tremendous place.

Afghanistan was once a pretty great place too.

Still, the kurds never had it very good in Turkey, even if the rest of the place was decent.
