Allow ads on TV Tropes | Buy an ad removal pass
I'm not using an ad blocker. I'm using the tracking protection feature built into Firefox. This feature is enabled by default in Private Browsing windows, and there is an about:config setting to enable it throughout Firefox. When I followed the "Allow ads on TV Tropes" link, I got instructions for how to disable Adblock Plus. As I have never used Adblock Plus, I followed the "Don't see the red octagon" link and chose "Firefox Private Browsing" from the menu. This gave the following instructions:
If you are using Firefox Private Browsing with Tracking Protection, a shield icon is displayed to the left of the Firefox address bar. Tracking Protection blocks ads from being displayed.
- Click the shield icon to the left of the address bar.
- Select "Disable protection for this session".
- Click "Done" below to close this window and refresh the page.
This is oversimplified. Tracking Protection doesn't block ads from being displayed if they're hosted on the same domain as the website. It blocks only third-party ads based on tracking each viewer's behavior across websites to infer his or her interests in order to stalk the viewer with creepy "retargeting" ads. And these third-party ads have been associated with malware transmission far more often than self-hosted ads. I'm not disabling antivirus just because a website can't fall back to self-hosted ads.
Fortunately, a backup of TV Tropes was taken in early July 2012, prior to TV Tropes' switch from the free CC BY-SA license to a non-free license in likely violation of its contributors' copyrights and its short-lived experiment with assignment of copyright in contributions. This backup was used to seed a fork, called All The Tropes, which is hosted on Miraheze. Instead of carrying advertising, projects on Miraheze are supported the same way as Wikimedia projects, namely through voluntary donations from readers.

I was an occasional visitor to TV tropes for a while, until they messed up something with the layout on mobile devices. Couldn't be bothered for a long enough stint that I lost track of the site and never looked back.
I did try all the tropes, but I didn't like it's user interface on mobiles at all. Maybe it's better now. Then again, maybe I have less time to waste on those sites than I used to ;-)

TVTropes also removed a lot of content a few years ago that was related to things like "loli" and rape, using the excuse that advertisers don't like it. There was no actual porn hosted there, of course. We see similar things with Youtube. It's obvious that advertisers are utterly toxic to the principle of free speech and relying on them is foolish.

Yeah. When the airliners slammed into the World Trade Center (the tallest building in NYC and the site of many broadcast antennas), it left a void which was exploited by very greedy rent seekers.
This was clearly a case of price gouging and a court where justice was being dispensed would have said so.
Instead, the case got a Reactionary anything-goes go-ahead-and-screw-them judge.
(I think that they still have appeals left.)
Roy Tuckman (Roy of Hollywood), the midnight-to-6AM guy at KPFK (and sorta syndicated to KPFT), explains the attempt by Reactionaries to try to kill Pacifica and buy up the licenses for a pittance after accomplishing that.

There's an intro and some pledge break stuff, then he gets into describing how a slimy L.A. lawyer and his minions got themselves elected to the governing board(s) and did evil things (purposely avoided due diligence; absolutely criminal back-stabbing behavior).
Roy wanders around, weaving the story into his show/the pledge effort up to about the 25 minute mark, and picks it up again, up to about the 40 minute mark.
So, about 9MB of the 40MB MP3.
Roy is a pretty slow talker, so, if your media player has a speedup feature, you can probably hear it in a small fraction of that time, especially if your app has an anti-chipmunk feature.

This is similar to the way wikitravel.org was taken private, and wikivoyage.org was forked.
I took a quick look and the site works fine in Tor Browser with JavaScript disabled.

One minor nit: The Miraheze version (allthetropes.org) may be more complete and up-to-date than the FANDOM powered by Wikia version (allthetropes.wikia.com). It probably doesn't show up higher in Google Search because of Google's fork penalty and the high inbound count of other sites on FANDOM powered by Wikia. And Miraheze has never covered a text article with a full-page prestitial video ad with a countdown [betterads.org]. There was a time when I would get several of those in a row when browsing Wikia on an Android device.
