Meet the community still obsessing over Mass Effect 2 10 years later:

Is Mass Effect 2 the series' golden goose or its ugly duckling? As the game passes its 10th anniversary this year, the debate rages on. Many space cadets recall their time with the game through a lens of utmost fondness, while others contend its status as the most detached and defunct entry in BioWare's illustrious trilogy (Andromeda, for all its pluses and minuses, is usually not part of the same discussion).

Regardless, a decade after its release, folks from all walks of life cling to Mass Effect 2 and the events surrounding it like a vice grip, continuing to invest time, effort, and money in the maintenance of their interest long after BioWare announced its plans to discontinue the series indefinitely.

What old games are Soylentils still invested in? Starcraft? Half Life?

And for Mass Effect fans, um, Liara or Miranda?

Yeesh. I'm gonna have nightmares looking at those horrible facial contortions they call "cut-scene animation." Haven't seen that kind of dyskenesia since having to drive the short bus for a living. In close-up scenes you can actually see the gaps between their eyeballs and eye sockets.

It's almost as if hiring social justice warriors for pussy points ruined gaming.

Minsc is hands down the funniest video game character ever. Yes, even considering Tina in her Borderlands 2 DLC. Yes, I still yell for Boo to go for the eyes at least once a year, as the situation warrants.

Having owned a few hamsters in his childhood, they're no joke. You piss em off and those saberteeth are going halfway through your fingerflesh and drawing blood that only a band-aid can stop. That could easily take out an eyeball or two. They train all night while you're asleep, honing their teeth biting on the bars in between sessions of hamster cardio on the wheel. And if you have two in a cage, both of those motherfuckers are going on the wheel at once for Spartacus-style shit.

Why would anyone argue that a selection of the greatest hits of all time aren't better than the majority of anything put out in this year?

Even so, I disagree with about half your list. I mean where is Star Control II ? Master of Orion II ? Fallout 2 ? Diablo ? Wing Commander (Privateer?!) You've got Alpha Centauri so I'll forgive the omission of Civilization... And I'd put Tradewars 2002 over LORD... but maybe that's just me. :)

Uplink, just for the fucking metagame they ran alongside it.

The Wizardry series. Jagged Alliance 1, DG, 2, UB. If you want to see where the idea for Baldur's Gate's dialog came from, go and read the dialog in Jagged Alliance. JA2 had some of the most insightful and macabre characters around.

Mwahaha. Kinda fun, but more fun was breaking out of Renegade or Citadel themselves. Some of the less common BBSes had hilariously bad upload code and it was possible to ... well, those who remember remember, and those who don't, never did these things.

The list was exemplary, not exhaustive. I agree, mostly, with your selections there!

        omission of Civilization

Oh shoot, I mentally grouped that under "sim everything" but of course Civ is Civ. Agree!

I'd put Tradewars 2002 over LORD

Also agree, but the gap between those who knew how to access and make use of the star computer (players could dump the inter-system mesh to get a galactic map) made TW2002 a bit awkward. Still, TW2002 - and the mods for it! - was amazing! But LORD was much more accessible, and much easier to drop into, have a bit of fun, and forget about for months. TW2002, your home planet system and citadel would be obliterated, if you left for a month on an active board.

Is Dwarf Fortress considered an "old game"?

Honestly, the nostalgia is much more vibrant than the reality ever was. I've tried Star Control 2 again and it just did not stick to me. I've tried the vanilla WoW and burned out in about 3 months. Tried Diablo 1 and switched to Path of Exile. Tried Master of Magic with community fixes and it was a different game. Only M.A.X. is still the same as a feeling, together with the hangs and crashes.

As there are no old books, there are also no old games.

However, Mass Effect epoch is over, for me. ME2 was excellent. But after ME3, ME died for me with Andromeda, boring and uninspirative when played. Too declassed, apparently for the purpose of widening the audience. And necessity of buying stuff for online multiplayer in ME3 was annoying.

Nearly the same happened to Elder Scrolls with too childish Oblivion. And similarly to ME2 community, there is still a thriving (and open source) community for Morrowind. Skyrim caught me for years, because its ability of modding. It happened I made a completely different game of it for myself in past 8 years, a magic system which suits me and my worldview best, and lot of rational changes to world.
I could say, I exhausted the that paradigm completely in this life. It's over too.

Currently, I focus on Fallout76 for a recreational gaming. I consider it a best multiplayer for the past 40 years. Proper tactics is a critical factor in it, thinking and planning is good. Evolving multiple characters (Lv105, 43, 24, 13, 12 as of today) helps to complete quest challenges quickly, which provides a steady income of atoms and removes a necessity of buying unlocks for true money, as lazy players do.
