Today marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. These were "a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks [...] against the United States of America on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001."

Of the 2,977 people who died, 2,605 were U.S. citizens and 372 non-U.S. citizens (excluding the 19 perpetrators). More than 90 countries lost citizens in the attacks, including the United Kingdom (67 deaths), the Dominican Republic (47 deaths), India (41 deaths), Greece (39 deaths), South Korea (28 deaths), Canada (24 deaths), Japan (24 deaths), Colombia (18 deaths), Jamaica (16 deaths), Philippines (16 deaths), Mexico (15 deaths), Trinidad and Tobago (14 deaths), Ecuador (13 deaths), Australia (11 deaths), Germany (11 deaths), Italy (10 deaths), Bangladesh (6 deaths), Ireland (6 deaths), Pakistan (6 deaths), and Poland (6 deaths).

It was a tragedy not only for America, but for the world.

I was at my girlfriend's apartment on 7th Avenue & 15th Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn that morning. It was a gorgeous, clear day with nary a cloud in the sky. My girlfriend was in the shower, listening to NPR on the radio. She called out, "Oh my god, an airplane hit the World Trade Center." I instantly replied, "It's a terror attack;" there was no chance a pilot had hit the building accidentally on a day with unlimited visibility.

She got dressed and I walked her to the 7th Ave stop of the F train at 9th Street. The column of smoke was already trailing overhead and little bits of burning paper were cartwheeling down around our heads. We commented how weird it was going to be to have the World Trade Center with a big hole in the side. I kissed her and kept going on 7th Avenue to my apartment at 6th Street. When I reached the corner of my block, the ground shook and a woman leaned out her fourth floor window and screamed that the first tower had collapsed.

I spent most of the morning reading situation updates on Slashdot. I went out at noon to donate blood at the Methodist hospital on 6th Street & 7th Ave; there was a huge line of people waiting to do the same, but the facility was not equipped to handle it so they turned everyone away. We stood around on the sidewalk feeling helpless while fighter jets flew cover overhead. The twin columns of smoke stretched across the sky and the air smelled like burnt metal; it stayed that way for months afterward. Every person in New York became kind and careful with each other for half a year, before reverting to form.

Years later I hired a guy who had built the video footage archiving servers for one of the top networks. They had footage from sky cams, traffic cams, and live camera shots from NYC and DC that day. He made a secret, private copy before the FBI showed up and confiscated everything.

The guy said I needed to look at one weird thing and showed me footage from a traffic cam in DC. It looked down an avenue that paralleled the side of the Pentagon that got hit. You could see a pickup truck in the intersection, and for 3-4 frames you could see a white object flying over the truck toward the Pentagon. It was too blurry to make out details, but it was roughly the length of the pickup and not as high. It was flying about 30-40 feet off the ground.

In other words, the dimensions of the craft were not those of a 747, and it was flying at a height between buildings that a passenger jet's wingspan could not have managed. It was almost certainly a cruise missile.

That means, either the 9/11 terrorists got their hands on a cruise missile and learned how to fire it, or the US government fired the cruise missile and it hit the Pentagon by accident or by design. My own theory is that Cheney ordered the Air Force to shoot down the 3rd passenger plane over water, and hit the Pentagon in a spot where there were few people to cover for that fact; that theory is bolstered by the remains of the 4th jet in Pennsylvania, that supposedly crashed when the passengers stormed the cockpit. Except, the remains looked a whole lot more like a plane that was blown up than a plane that crashed into the ground. In other words, I think Cheney had that plane shot down too, and came up with the cover story that the passengers crashed it.
