...taken by Walter Kleinfeldt who joined a German gun crew in 1915 and fought at the Somme aged just 16. As his haunting pictures, taken with a Contessa camera, make all too clear, life in the trenches was a harrowing experience. The images provide an insight into the epic machinery of war – and capture the darkest moments of battle, with bodies strewn among the rubble.

      You got it half-right. The wars indeed are fought by the poor, but on behalf of the rich, not necessarily politicians. The overlap is great, but not total. A politician who is not a part of plutocracy has every reason to oppose the war, which is why it is imperative to nudge our political system in the direction where wealth affects the policy as little as possible.

      Ahh.. Never mind, I see the issue. I've been in the habit of going to both sites. In all honesty I prefer the stories and comments here. Once /. goes full beta, it will just be here.

    I was about to come in here and post a bile-filled rant for tricking me into clicking on a Daily Fail link, but then I saw that you had, in fact, given warning. My own stupid fault for not spotting it.

    For me, that warning was the clincher: This site is now officially, definitely, better than /.

        War can do that. My dad lied about his age, and enlisted in the Navy at age 15. He was shipped home from the Pacific in pieces. He survived, or I wouldn't be here - but he doesn't look like a teenager again in any pictures.

      No amount of warning can wash away the stain of actually having clicked on the link in question. The words WARNING: DAILY MAIL LINK should have appears in giant, blinking red letters at the beginning and end of the post.

      Soylent needs a UK staff editor/expert to prevent this type of thing happening in the future. I mean, what's next: a link to Fox News?

        Not a fan of the Daily Mail but it doesn't matter as its the images that are the story.

        However it does prompt the question why can't the links open in new tabs by default? I know slashdot was infamous for its nobody ever clicks on the links anyway but sometimes you want to take a look maybe start reading comments while the new tab loads, read the article close it and on to the next. Maybe thats one of the reasons for not reading the articles.

        Maybe this could be one part of soylent which could be better. Actually why not do that for the frontpage too. scan the story list open tabs to ones that interest you and proceed to digest. All this back forward navigation is a pain. At least slashdot had a link back to the front page from the bottom of the story.

              I cant say I've ever had success with the laptop left+right click, totally discovered the middle mouse click by accident :)
