South Korea's military cyber command, set up to guard against hacking, appears to have been breached by North Korea, the military has said.

A spokesman told the BBC that classified information was thought to have been stolen, although it is not clear exactly what data was accessed.

The North has previously been accused of hacking into banks and media outlets but never the South's military. Pyongyang has in the past rejected allegations of cyber crime involvement.

"It seems the intranet server of the cyber command has been contaminated with malware. We found that some military documents, including confidential information, have been hacked," a military spokesman told South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

It is not clear whether low-grade documents or more important details like war plans were accessed.

The military said that the compromised section of its network was isolated once the attack was detected.

When I hear claims about NK hackers breaking into this company or that organization I always have to wonder. If there really is such a group of Super Wizard class hackers who can do all this stuff in NK how come it is always seems so easy to track their attacks back to them? If they really are that good why couldn't they erase their tracks or alter them to look like it came from somewhere else, like Russia or Iran.

Not saying the NorKs don't have hackers, every country does now a days, but it just seems to be too convenient that all these major Internet attacks against SK and many other Asian entities all seem to track back to NK.

More likely the victim just doesn't want to admit that they were fools and left the firewall passwords as defaults.

well there are countries were the government takes control ... of all: people, business, industry, etc.
they mean business but they also have responsibilities.

in other countries, the government is a job like any other but will special perks.
mostly pushing paper and making propaganda.
they aren't "really" in control because money rules and mostly
stand in between the people and the business / industry.

in the first case, hackers are direct subordinates of the government whilst in the second
case, hackers and there "produce" are a asset that needs to be milked for profit.

Please remember that the Korea divide was engineered by the forces that were active right after WW2. The divide was made with bad intentions. They did not want a united Korea competing against American-controlled Japan.

Korea was divided for material gain. It is like the Berlin Wall [wikipedia.org].

So calling DPRK "enemy" means the same people (north and south) are enemies of each other just like East and West Germans were enemies of each other. Hint: they weren't. And North and South Koreans aren't either.

Everybody needs an enemy I suppose.

Yes, the South is the Enemy of the North. The North randomly fires artillery on civilians in the South. They torpedoed the Cheonan. They mined the DMZ. They open dams with zero warning. There is a history of aggression from the North.
