The raspberry pi foundation have announced a new edition to the famously cheap Raspberry Pi Zero: Raspberry Pi Zero W

It appears to be the Raspberry Pi Zero with the Raspberry Pi 3's wireless chipset added on.

The retail price will be double from the $5 of the original Pi Zero to $10, but as before, expect to add on the price of the specific mini cables and pin headers to turn it into a fully fledged Pi. [takyon ed note: But not necessarily as many because... wireless?]

There is also a new Raspberry Pi Zero official case (which fits both Pi Zero editions).

What's it gonna cost to get a power adapter, and whatever it takes to converse with my 3 TB NAS, and stream from hulu/amazon/whatever? Cuz if it's less than about $80/month I come out ahead.

/ really need to call Time Warner tomorrow and talk about my cable bill
// not getting $150/month value out of it

So first they beat the C.H.I.P. on price (and stop it getting press) by rushing out the zero with no wireless interfaces.

Now that they finally come out with a feature-comparable version, it costs a dollar more?

    Sounds about right.

It makes me laugh when I hear IoT and people think running a quad core CPU with a full blown OS is how you control a light bulb. Web dev's....sigh.

The Pi foundation lost a lot of credibility with me over the Zero availability situation. They should've come clear on that. Instead they went on with a "we're really going to ramp up production next week" vibe, with fanbois chiming in that it's in stock right now. Yeah, right, including a bunch of cables one won't need for embedded stuff and only one per person. And now, out of a sudden, mass production of the W is announced, yet still no sign of an end of the "for a fiver"-Unit shortage.

Let's look at what prices arduinos and esp8266 boards from the spot market fetch - quick check on the bay - 5.99 EUR plus shipping for the cheapest Uno R3 clone offer on the first page shipping from a Euro location. The esp8266 are a bit cheaper if you buy them in 5 packs. I believe there is no way for the Raspi Foundation to deliver a similar board, from their first tier sourcing and production chain, and with a couple hundred megs of RAM thrown in, at that price. At least not with any external subsidies (like Broadcom giving away the CPU).

I wonder how they will fare with the "W" model, because a tenner would still be amazingly cheap for a full Linux system, even if one does not need the radio parts for embedded projects. So far it looks quite unavailable in its cheap and naked form, too.

On the upside, I just saw that the CM3 is actually stocked and available at RS. 36 EUR (incl. VAT) does go a bit towards the range of what you pay for the same power in a Chinaphone, including case and touch display, but of course the latter isn't really suitable for embedded development with an appropriate ecosystem and long term availability.
