It's that time of the year again, putting the important parts into review. Kicking it off Pornhub style. Billions of yearly visits with more breakdowns then you ever wanted to know or could shake a stick at on a per country level.

It seems only a brave editor is willing to promote this story, but as I think I was the guy who submitted the 2017 equivalent, which was both amusing and informative, I have no problem picking out some highlights. Some redactions have been necessary to keep SN SFW, obviously -- FP.

There are a lot of interesting, non-pornographic, data gathered. First it's the amount of data they gather on EVERYTHING about the people that visit their site. One does wonder what the users of the site really does think about that, clearly they might not mind since it's not the first year this has been released. They do seem to keep excellent track on their users, whom also seem to volunteer way to much information.

We can clearly see more and more mobile devices are used and less desktop views. Perhaps it's just more "practical" and user-friendly considering the sites content.

"Mobile porn continued it’s meteoric rise throughout 2018, with 80% of Pornhub’s worldwide visits now coming from smartphones and tablets."

It's kind of entertaining to think that every year they upload about 115 years worth of video, or every minute there is 2 hours of new content (I do wonder how they know it's new content tho and not just the same clips or old clips -- how do they detect dupes?). Still you won't ever be able to watch it and if you somehow manage to one is left wondering what it would do to a persons mind.

I do wonder what the facination is with "Japanese", it seems to be all over the place. I would say it showed that there is difference in taste, but then considering how many people looked for it perhaps there isn't. Also it becomes kind scarey watching the most viewed categories when they compare women to men, even if women are only about 1/3-1/4 of the datapoints. But atleast everyone seems to be in agreement about lesbians being awesome.

Stormy Daniels probably got more attention then she has ever had, which might be a good thing for her since she might have to relaunch her career to pay all them legal bills.

With that in mind, I do seem to recall that we had this news item last year to -- which is why I did submit it, but now I can't find it in the search for the sites news stories. I think I found the one for 2016 but nothing for 2017. Might be weak searching capabilities but still, link please?

Yeah, that's why I was happy to push this article, it's always an interesting read even for tech reasons as well as societal/cultural ones, thanks for submitting it. Perhaps I subbed the 2016 one, not the 17 one, in which case we were both lax last year!

I'd like to know how reliable they consider their data. Are some of the women really just men trying to hide their identities. Or dogs?

I'd also like them to merge Chrome OS into Linux - the linux figures didn't drop, as Chrome OS's gains were bigger than 'Linux's losses!

And that map of regional preferences is hilarious...

Beyond the porn as noted this year in review offers quite a lot of interesting things on a social- and cultural level, or at least I think so. The evolution of porn, or the preference or what not. There are also some funny oddities to such as why is the cartoon of Stormy Daniels holding a Amanita muscaria mushroom in her hand? Those things are quite toxic, like her?

Also interesting in the pornstar rankings, the first man doesn't show up until spot #12, the next man is at #36 and then #55. That really does say something, probably the fairest conclusion is that the male talent just doesn't really matter all that much. They could more or less just be replaced by random cock dude, if he could perform on command that is.

It looks like the United States is like obsessed with porn from the country traffic data, but then that probably happens when you have more or less your own continent (sorry Canada). I guess if you added up all the European countries etc it would probably even out. It just looks skewed as fuck the way they present that bar-graph.

Views of the ‘Japanese’ category were bolstered by the additional traffic coming from countries like Japan and the Philippines where visitors tend to watch more Japanese porn.

So people in general like to watch things that sort of remind them of themselves, so more about trying to identify then and not so much yellow-fever. Still it doesn't explain why the rest of the world seems obsessed with "Japanese" for their porn desires.

I agree that the world map was kind funny. We live in the matriarchy for sure ... Funniest is probably Big Dick Pakistan squeezed in between the Anal Middle east and MILF India.

Question: How come "straight guys" is the top searched term in the Gay Male category? Sure ok I guess that is like straight males searching for lesbians. It just seem odd somehow.

I do wonder tho how they quantify their data search terms -- after all isn't Lesbian, Lesbians scissoring and lesbian threesomes pretty much lesbians, just doing specific things or there is more of them. Instead of it being three separate items.

Women are twice as likely to watch content featuring ‘Gangbang’ and ‘Double Penetration’ porn

So much for the romantic hand holding and watching the stars. Also Big Dick was the fourth female viewing option while it barely broke into the top 10 for the male viewers. Gangbangs didn't even make the male top10.

Most searched for Pornstars by Women. Stormy Daniels, almost twice the bar size of the next person on the list. Why? Did they wanna see who serviced the president or? Any comment on that one Donald? Have we all missed out somehow?

        ***

I tried to visit the site, for science. There sure are a lot of ads and tracking shit on that site. Content wise it appear to deliver what you would expect. That said tho it seems there are a lot clips from other commercial pornography sites, are they getting a cut or is this just some kind of never ending circus of takedown notices etc going around? This could explain the hours of content being uploaded every minute. But I wanted to see what they wanted to know to sign up, that said they are somewhat smarter about it then normal and I didn't fancy going about setting up new mail accounts etc just to find out, they did check the email you supplied so that it wasn't from one of the big known throw-away emailers, so I resorted to look at their Terms of Service instead.

I wonder how many actually bothered to read the terms of service and their privacy policy, my guess it's a very low low number of users. After all it gets in the way of the instant gratification you came to the site for.

        https://www.pornhub.com/information#terms [pornhub.com]

It's pretty much the standard legal mumbo-jumbo where you promise that you are 18 years old or that it's legal where you are to watch, they don't check. We are on the honor system here. So all the data you enter could be complete bullshit, as long as it's not to obvious after all their advertisers could get upset then. So you, the user, should keep it within reason.

There are a few quite amusing things in there such as ...

        No Refunds
PAYMENTS ARE NONREFUNDABLE AND THERE ARE NO REFUNDS OR CREDITS FOR PARTIALLY USED PERIODS.

I guess this is business standard, after all you can't undo what has been done or seen.

        2. ensuring that all persons who access the Websites through your internet connection are aware of these Terms of Service and comply with them.

That is just funny on so many levels.

        ***

I'd like to know how reliable they consider their data. Are some of the women really just men trying to hide their identities. Or dogs?

Some of the data is probably quite accurate, such as how long accounts watch this or that, what they search for and what they watch. The country data is probably fairly accurate to, I doubt a lot of people go thru the process of trying to obfuscate or VPN to see the porn. But the age, name and gender and such is probably quite iffy. There probably is a difference between account types tho, if you go for the paid accounts and buy things via their services they know a lot more then since they want a credit card etc. But otherwise unless you are also uploading your own content that you want to get paid for it's probably all quite bad and iffy. After all it only becomes important if you want to get paid yourself rather then grabbing data from some random spank-account.

The weird part is that it doesn't feel like it was two years ago that this was news the last time. So it could be the 2017 or 2016 thing, I just can't find it. I think I made a comment about it to but I can't find that either. But then I didn't invest a lot of time searching for it either.

The mobile vs. desktop part was interesting. I know mobile is popular, but over 80% now? No wonder every website now is a dumbed-down, optimized for mobile mess now. One thing that wasn't clear since they broke down the usage by gaming console further down, is if they are counting gaming consoles as desktops, mobile, or if gaming consoles even make up a significant portion of their users.

I'm not sure. I think they are separate entities, but that could just be my interpretation of it. They probably check for device and the options are probably desktop - mobile - tablet and console and each then got their own and is not included in the other. If anything shouldn't tablets and mobile be the same to then? They should have more in common then say desktop and console. But then chrome books and such are counted as desktop computers, or at least that is what it looks like to me. That said tho I wonder if gaming consoles are even responsible for a large amount of traffic, there is no data for that really. After all if one watches that pie chart "Traffic by Phone, Desktop and Tablet" then consoles are not even an option.

"Straight" porn has cocks in it. Erm, why should I enjoy watching *someone else* pleasure a female? That's half way to cuckoldry.

      Other viewpoints are available.

Oooh, I didn't intend that pun, but indeed, the popularity of "POV" porn is for those who wish to pretend it's not someone else getting their dick wet. Which kind of reinforces the view that non-POV porn is a bit cucky.

All of the "not real humans" categories - cartoons and furries - grew, and I think this is not a particularly positive trend for the species. I won't accuse it of being an evolutionary dead end, as my long-term partner and I are staunchly NPG, and equally guilty of that accusation. However, at least we know what human beings are, and don't need tentacles to spice up our private life. In some way this trend isn't surprising, the rise in cartoon obsession in porn goes gland in hand with its increase in popular culture anyway, which goes hand in hand with the more widespread infantalisation of the species over the decades.

Humans have historically been willing to get it on with anything that they could. Neanderthals wasn't even the tip of the iceberg. For that matter, a large number of people of both sexes get it on with plastic objects that have no obvious gross similarity to a partner of the same species. (Detailed similarity is necessary for comfort, so doesn't count.)

Every minute, [redacted] new visitors arrive at Pornhub, [redacted] videos are watched and [redacted] searches are performed. [redacted] of those video views are of [redacted], which is still Pornhub’s most watched video of all time at [redacted] views.

I don't see how at least 9 of 14 of those could possibly be offensive. If this is some sort of joke, it's not funny.
