Tokyo reports most daily Covid-19 cases in six months as Olympics loom:

TOKYO (REUTERS) - Tokyo reported the highest number of new Covid-19 cases in almost six months on Wednesday (July 14), with the Olympics due to open in the capital in just nine days.

The city government said there were 1,149 new cases, the highest daily tally since Jan 22, adding to evidence that a new fifth wave of infections is under way, driven by more infectious virus variants and a low vaccination rate.

Amid rising cases, the government declared renewed state of emergency for Tokyo and surrounding prefectures last week and Olympics organisers announced that no fans would be allowed at events in those areas.

[...] Health experts had warned that seasonal factors, increased mobility, and the spread of variants would lead to a rebound this summer. Kyoto University professor Yuki Furuse earlier projected that new daily cases in Tokyo could rise to 1,000 in July and 2,000 in August, potentially maxing out hospital beds in the capital region.

[...] Just 31 per cent of people in Japan have received at least one Covid-19 inoculation dose, among the lowest rate among wealthy countries, according to a Reuters tracker.

[...] A coronavirus cluster at a Japanese hotel where dozens of Brazilian Olympic team members are staying has raised new concern about infections at what the world's top Olympics official promised on Wednesday would be "historic" Games.

Current statistics from Johns Hopkins and Worldometers.com for Japan.

But, I think the Olympics should have been called off this year. The risks are just too high, IMO. It's not like failing to observe the Olympics is likely to lead to WW3, or WW16, or anything really bad. I understand, a lot of people have worked hard to qualify. I feel bad for them. But, reality is, there's still a pandemic going on. Tens of thousands of people flying into town for something that almost qualifies as frivolous just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Yes. Children are much less likely to suffer severe illness, but some do, and some die. Over 2 million children have had covid, and hundreds have died.

It isn't about statistical averages, when it is your own child. Most parents are going to want to minimize unnecessary risk. And, not postponing the Olympics until after the pandemic has passed, especially when it is being held in a country which hasn't made as much progress on vaccinations as most wealthy nations, is unnecessary risk.

oh noes, hundreds of children out of millions of children! hey sherlock, the same percentage of kids die from the flu as from covid.

.01% of children who get covid die. Since covid started, there have been 300 child deaths

            https://www.aappublications.org/news/2020/04/10/fluupdate041020 [aappublications.org]

lets keep in mind that a huge chunk of those deaths are not just children - it's babies.

So, since we're talking about flying to attend the olympics, how many children under 12 (can't get the vaccine), and how many babies, do you expect on that 17 hour flight to tokyo to attend the olympics?

            >a country which hasn't made as much progress on vaccinations
right. when it's not super urgent or super dangerous, it's a low priority. why is it not urgent or dangerous in Japan? oh, because they were wearing masks religiously even before covid started, have always been super-clean, and they continue to do so.

            >It isn't about statistical averages
no, it's about the subset of the population that flies a full day to go to the olympics, which does not include the group you're speaking of. but you're purposely ignoring that just to tell the OP he's wrong. in reality, you're just looking like a retard who can't read.

that would be basic common sense - same as with masks. why do masks work? because put an open hand an inch in front of your face and sneeze - you get a bunch of wet shit on your hand, and very little everywhere else. congratulations, you've just reduced the amount of disease you've spat out by 100 times, so it's going to infect less people, because there's less of it that you've spread. with a vaccine, any vaccine, you get the virus inside your body, and it can't grow - your body kills it faster than it replicates. this is how vaccines work.

yes, with a vaccine you'll get a couple of thousand viral bodies out there. except you need a million spread around to actually infect someone. so no, the vaccinated do not spread the virus, and no, no one has changed their tune. well, except for your the fake bullshit feeding your misquoted and out of context information, and plain old making shit up. they used to say covid was a china bioweapon, then said it is a hoax, then claimed trump invented the german vaccine, now they're telling you to fuck your dead father. There are still massive shortages of vaccine in Japan.

They are about where the US was around January of this year with availability and rationing.

Lots of people of all ages there want to get vaccinated but can't and the waiting lists are a mile long (or weeks / months long in this case).

The Japanese government, the ruling political class and institutions still live in their 80s glory, with fax machines, personal stamp, and everything.

It's not a lost decade. The way they are going, it looks like a lost century.

This is what happens if you can't face the fact and learn from the history.

The US should learn from this.

I'm not taking the shot. I see letting me die on my own terms in peace as an absolute right I should have. Nobody needs to keep me "safe" - I can fend for myself.
The way the government suddenly "cares" about every individual should really cause you to question their motives.

i mean, like "today we found 5 covid cases (and tested 15 people)" -vs- "today we found alot of covid, like 3000 (and we tested 30'000 people)"
