https://arstechnica.com/health/2023/07/ohio-bans-doctor-after-botched-surgeries-on-tiktok-threaten-patients-lives/

Yesterday, an Ohio plastic surgeon, Katharine Grawe—who accumulated nearly 15 million likes by livestreaming operations on TikTok as "Doctor Roxy"—was permanently banned from practicing medicine and surgery in Ohio.

The decision came following a November 2022 suspension temporarily barring Grawe from seeing patients after the State Medical Board of Ohio reviewed "clear and convincing evidence" from multiple patients who were harmed during Grawe's livestreamed surgeries. The board decided to suspend Grawe's license, saying that her "continued practice presents a danger of immediate and serious harm to the public."

Dentist Accused of Extracting Teeth While Riding Hoverboard 31 comments

An Alaska dentist, Seth Lookhart, is being prosecuted on 17 counts of fraud and "unlawful dental acts." It's one of these alleged dental acts — Count XI — that has moved me.

Court papers filed this week say in or around July 2016, Lookhart "performed a dental extraction procedure on a sedated patient while riding a hoverboard and filmed the procedure and distributed the film to persons outside his dental practice."

[...] What if his hoverboard skills weren't perfect? What if he'd slipped at the vital moment as his tools were gripped around the patient's teeth? Please forgive me if I also mention that hoverboards have been known to explode and catch fire.

        Their latest estimate found that approximately 251,000 lives are claimed each year because of medical error

        https://www.sidgilreath.com/medical-malpractice-death-statistics.html [sidgilreath.com]

        As of May 1, at least 13,959 people have died from gun violence in the U.S. this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive – which is an average of roughly 115 deaths each day.

        https://abcnews.go.com/US/116-people-died-gun-violence-day-us-year/story?id=97382759 [go.com]

        By my math, that's 42k(ish) gun deaths per year...so no, that would be about every 6 years.

        And I'm sure many of those doctors *are* held accountable. This is a troll comparison.

        Gun violence archive, huh? I've said many times that their "statistics" are madeup bullshit. https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/methodology [gunviolencearchive.org]

        There are problems with their claimed methodology, starting with the inclusion of suicides, and the inclusion of defensive gun uses. As for their actual methodology, it is widely known that they peruse newspapers for stories, rather than relying on any responsible reporting agencies. Example, https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/last-72-hours [gunviolencearchive.org] The top of the list when I clicked that link, was this source, https://www.everythinglubbock.com/news/lubbock-shooting-victim-taken-to-umc-details-still-coming-in/ [everythinglubbock.com] which is nothing more and nothing less than a local news story.

        As we all know, any given news story may or may not be accurate. We have all seen stories that were edited, or retracted, or refuted, and that all happens routinely in "gun violence" stories. Supposing that GVA runs with a headline in which 5 are dead, and 15 injured. Later, it is determined that only 3 died, and only 9 were injured. Does GVA "repair" their statistics? Fuck no, they want those overinflated numbers!!

        https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/gun-violence-archive-flawed-start/ [thetruthaboutguns.com]

        Please read that last article with the same care that you will use when reading GVA's methodoloty. The methodoloogy is flawed beyond any possible serious use by honest researchers. I can find more on GVA - but I'm quite certain that you are intelligent enough and honest enough to find your own references regarding GVA. They are complete and utter shit, funded by rich anti-Second Amendment arseholes.

            Well, guns don't kill. They lie inert on a shelf, or in a safe, or under the bed, until someone picks them up, and uses them to kill. But, I did mean that doctors end more lives in a year, than shooters end in a decade. GVA overinflates "gun deaths" by quite a lot. There are not 40,000 Americans killed with guns every year. FBI statistics are far more believable. https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8.xls [fbi.gov] https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/shr [cjis.gov]

            The FBI shows that "gun deaths" peaked in 2020, just under 18,000. Years previous and after were under 15,000. So, the craziest year in recent history is less than half of what GVA claims.

            To answer your question more directly: suicides are mental health problems, not properly classed under crimes of violence. Accidents aren't generally crimes either. The real concern when people start talking about "gun deaths" or "gun violence" or whatever, is properly criminal offenses using firearms against innocent victims. But, no matter whether we include suicides and accidents, there simply aren't as many people killed as GVA claims.

            Your link to McGill is interesting, and food for thought. I've never done any research on medical malpractice, maybe I shouldn't make such a bold claim. But, on the other hand, many people have access to accurate gun violence statistics, but instead, choose to inflate numbers insanely. When it comes to bold, unsupported claims, the anti-Second Amendment crowd wins first place.

              Nonetheless, the homicide rate in the US is way higher than in other countries having equivalent GDP, e.g. comparing US to UK:

              https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/homicide-rate [ourworldindata.org]

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_guns_and_homicide [wikipedia.org]

              There is good evidence that a significant number of those homicides are committed using guns, and hence it is highly likely that an reducing the number of guns would reduce the homicide rate. I can't prove that statement, of course.

              One might argue that there are other ways to fight the homicide rate that are more effective than illegalisation of guns, such as:
              * better education
              * better healthcare
              * better social care/welfare

                You do have something of a point. When the FBI says that x number of people died, they can point to x number of death certificates. Gun Violence Archive only has news articles to cite, which may or may not be accurate. GVA never actually looks at anything like a factual document.

              suicides are mental health problems, not properly classed under crimes of violence.

              The reason they're counted is because in many cases people prevented from attempting suicide (or the attempt fails) end up living out the rest of their lives. Sometimes people need to be kept away from the opportunity. I knew a kid, for example, that got high at a party and claimed his head was bulletproof. He was twelve, and he proved his assertion wrong in a way that traumatized his best friend. (i only heard about it in passing and i had bad dreams for a while.) From some discussions I've had since I think his death was categorized as a suicide.

              The gun debate is about saving lives, and in this sort of context those deaths are preventable. So... yeah, they get counted regardless of the myriad of ways you attempt to word-smith them away. "Those numbers don't count" is not a productive argument. Even if it were you ain't gettin' the USA's high score low enough to do the absolute nothing about it that you desire.

                Some steps that would make a dent in both crime and violence are:

                1. Woke prosecutors stop giving a pass to a dirt bag who happens to be of the correct complexion.
                2. ALL prosecutors stop giving a pass to wealthy dirtbags.
                3. Stop the nonsense of decades-long imprisonment for non-violent victimless crimes.
                4. Prevent dangerous inmates from going free. Penalties for heinous crimes are simply not harsh enough.
                5. Close down all those "gun free" zones. They don't work, and in fact, they attract the crazies who want to harm people.
                6. Just eliminate all the laws that prevent law-abiding citizens from acquiring and carrying their weapon of choice. Again, the laws don't work, because violent criminals and gang bangers still get THEIR weapons.
                7. The media voluntarily stop giving the 'fifteen minutes of fame' to every crazy bastard who performs a heinous act.

                And, someone needs to help me understand why being murdered by bludgeoning is any more humane than being shot. Murder is murder. The elimination of personal weapons only ensures that the strongest person can enforce his will on weaker people. God made man, Sam Colt made men equal.
