An ethicist's take: Is it OK to lie to an AI chatbot during a job interview?:

If you're secure in your job, you may not have encountered just yet how AI is "elevating" and "enhancing" the job search experience, for employers and job seekers alike. Its use is most clearly felt in the way high-volume staffing agencies have begun to employ AI chatbots to screen applicants well before they interact with a human hiring manager.

From the employer's perspective, this makes perfect sense. Why wade through stacks of resumes to weed out the ones that don't look to be a good fit even just on first glance, if an AI can do that for you?

From the job seeker's perspective, the experience is likely to be decidedly more mixed.

This is because many employers are using AI not just to search a body of documents, screening them for certain keywords, syntax, and so on. Rather, in addition to this, search firms are now using AI chatbots to subsequently "interview" applicants to screen them even more thoroughly and thus further winnow the pool of resumes a human will ultimately have to go through.

Often, this looks the same as conversing with ChatGPT. Other times, it involves answering specific questions in a standard video/phone screen where the chatbot will record your answers, thereby making them analyzable. If you're a job seeker and you find yourself in the latter scenario, don't worry, they will give the chatbot a name like "Corrie" and that will put you completely at ease and in touch with a sense of your worth as a fully-rounded person.

On the job seeker's side, this is where the issues begin to arise.

If you know your words are being scanned by a gatekeeper strictly for certain sets of keywords, what's the incentive to tell the whole truth about your profile? It's not possible to intuit what exact tally or combo of terms you need to hit, so it's better to just give the bot all of the terms listed in the job description and then present your profile more fully at the next stage in an actual interview with a human. After all, how would a job seeker present nontraditional experience to the bot with any assurance it will receive real consideration?

Indeed, when the standardadvice is to apply for jobs of interest even when you only bring somewhere between 40-to-60% of the itemized skills and background, why take the risk the chatbot sets the bar higher?

For a job seeker, lying to the bot — or at least massaging the facts strategically for the sake of impressing a nonhuman gatekeeper — is the best, most effective means of moving on to the next stage in the hiring process, where they can then present themselves in a fuller light.

But what are the ethics of such dishonesty? Someone who lies to the chatbot would have no problem lying to the interviewer, some might say. We're on a slippery slope, they would argue.

To puzzle out a way of thinking about this question, I propose we look at the situation from the perspective of the 18th-century German philosopher Immanuel Kant, who I referenced in my previous essay. Kant, you see, is famously stringent when it comes to lying, with a justly earned reputation as an absolutely unyielding scold.

You need money you just don't have to pay for something you think is truly, unequivocally good in itself: your mother's last blood transfusion, say. Is it acceptable to borrow the money from a friend and lie when promising to pay it back when you know you simply can't? Hard no, says Kant. Having an apparently altruistic reason for telling a lie still doesn't make it OK in his view.

In fact, the lengths he will go to uphold this principle are perhaps most evident in his infamous reply to a question posed by the English philosopher Benjamin Constant (truly, no one remembers who he is apart from his brush with Kant).

Suppose your best friend arrives at your door breathless, Constant proposes, chased there by a violent pursuer — an actual axe murderer, in fact — and your friend asks that you hide them in your house for safety. And then suppose, having dutifully done so, you find yourself face-to-face with the axe-murderer now at your doorstep. When the murderous cretin demands to know where your friend is, isn't a lie to throw him off acceptable here, Herr Professor?

Absolutely not, Kant answers, to the shock and horror of first-year philosophy students everywhere. Telling a lie is never morally permissible and there just are no exceptions. (There is some more reasonable hedging in Kant's essay on this matter, but you get the general idea.)

The reason for turning to Kant specifically here is, I hope, now becoming somewhat clear. We can use his ideas to perform a kind of test. If we can come up with a reason why lying to the gatekeeping chatbot would be OK even for Kant, then it seems we will have arrived at a solid justification for a certain amount of strategic dishonesty in this instance.

So what would Kant's thinking suggest about lying to the chatbot? Well, we begin to glimpse something of an answer when we examine why exactlylying is such a problem in Kant's view. It's a problem, he argues, because it invariably involves treating another person in a way that ultimately tramples on their personhood. When I lie to my friend about repaying borrowed money, no matter how well-intentioned the ends to which I propose to put this money are, I wind up treating my interlocutor not as a person who has individual autonomy in their decision-making, but rather simply as a means to an end.

In this way, I don't treat them as a person at all; I treat them as a tool for achieving ends I alone determine. The lie makes it impossible for them to truly grant or withhold, in any meaningful sense, their consent when it comes to participating in that particular way in my particular scheme. We oughtn't treat others instrumentally, solely as a means to some end, for Kant, because when we do, we reduce them to a mere tool at our disposal, and thus fail to respect their real status as a being endowed with the capacity to freely set ends for themselves.

So what does this mean for our job interview with the chatbot?

It suggests that when job seekers give the chatbot what they think it wants to hear, there are far worse things to be worried about online. This is because the chatbot is itself, precisely, a means to an end — a tool, without any agency to set its own supreme, overarching ends; one that a hiring unit is using to make the task of finding suitable employees easier and less time consuming.

We might perfectly well decide those are admirable goals with respect to the overall functioning of the organization. But we shouldn't lose sight, on either side of the interviewing table, of what they are and what purpose they serve, and thus in turn, how sizable the difference between "chatting" with them and an actual interlocutor really is.

Until Corrie becomes a real interlocutor, I think we all more or less know how their interactions with job seekers are going to go — and perhaps that's just fine for now.

    If a company foists an AI on me to interview me, right off the bat, I consider them disrespectful at best and adversarial at worst. I have no respect for whoever treats human people like cogs in the machine to test for fit. Using AI to do a fundamentally human job says a lot about whoever chooses to use an AI for that purpose.

    But everybody needs to put food on the table right?

    With that in mind, I'll say and do anything to the AI to cheat, trick it or confuse it to get the job. If the company running the AI doesn't find out, I won. If they do find out, most likely I won't get called back and that's fine, as I don't particularly wish to work for an employer that uses AI for job interviews. If they do call me back, I'll tell them the AI hallucinated the interview, and they're welcome to take me to court over it if they so wish, just for S&G.

      Over the years, I have "flubbed" a number of interviews... looking back, every single one of them was throwing me "you don't want to work for this clown circus" red noses all over the place.

      If you want "in" to a big company, getting through the AI gatekeepers may be the most efficient option.

      In the job/employee seekers' arms-race, when I am seeking a candidate with a particular set of skills, I put a "reasonably adjacent" set of skills in the advertisement, maybe even with a ringer or two that the ideal candidate isn't likely to have. Then, I can look for those resumes' and interviews that hit my "hot buttons" that I didn't advertise, and remain extra skeptical about the ones obviously telling me things they think I want to hear.

      Reminds me of a certain (to remain nameless) applicant to the position of "part time stock" at a local grocery store who knew: 1) new hires without experience don't start in stock, they start in "front end" carrying groceries out in the heat, the rain, etc. 2) even part time stock starts at a low hourly rate like $4.15/hr, you need some experience to get up around $6+. So, the applicant lied - outright - to the manager and assistant manager, wagering they'd not care enough to make a long distance telephone call to a competing chain grocery store 200+ miles away. Applicant was correct, offered part time stock at $6 per hour and worked that job just as long as they wanted it. Might have been a career mistake if the plan was to move up into management and work there for decades... better to just take the experience and jump to that competing chain if that became the aspiration.

        Over the years, I have "flubbed" a number of interviews...

        Over the years, I flubbed *one* and exactly one interview.

        Fortunately it was while I was gainfully employed and I was mildly interested to see what the market was offering.

        About six months before the internet, I worked for a spectacularly shitty company. One of those companies where 98% of the employees are all children of the owner and they all had very strong generic religious convictions.

        That year I landed them a few new clients and was bringing in about $650k/year to the company. They were paying me $17.50/hr.

        Imagine my disappointment when they issued a check with the memo line reading "Christmas bonus!"....and the dollar field reading $200.

        Anyways, I handed it back to my boss (one of the sons of the CEO) and said "I appreciate the offer, but we don't celebrate Christmas. It's a pagan holiday. Consider it my donation towards diapers for the kid your wife just had."

        He took the check back, and I thought nothing of it. Three days later the CEO burns rubber into the parking lot, jumps out, stomps inside, finds me, and backs me up against the wall with his finger about an inch from my face while screaming "IN THIS COMPANY WE BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST AND WE CELEBRATE HIS BIRTH!!!" before immediately turning on his heel, storming out, burning rubber again, and merging into traffic with no regard for the safety of others, nearly t-boning his shiny new car that he bought a week ago. I quit a few weeks later.

        Anyways, 6 months later I'm chatting with this interviewer and he asked how I handle stressful/bad situations. Instead of explaining it elegantly, I stammered out some garbage about company culture, the time I had a CEO screaming at me about Jesus and Christmas, how I quit a few weeks later, and how it was important to find a "good fit" in corporate culture because of the risk of lawsuits or something--not that I was litigious...but corporate culture can be difficult...or whatever...

        The interview ended quickly and I obviously didn't get a call back. Probably not a good idea to mention how you aren't litigious and talk about how CEOs could end up in lawsuits.

        Oh well...like I said, I wasn't really interested in the job unless the offer was significantly higher than what I was making at the time. Meh.

      I was about to say the same thing, except maybe i'll just disconnect the second i find out it's a chatbot. That is as disrespectful as not contacting the person to say they didn't make the cut, even when you say you will. Personally i don't like to play games like that, but i do approve lying to a chatbot as much as one sees fit.

        The only situation where I would personally consider the use of AI in the hiring process to be acceptable would be for the smallest companies that can't afford to have an entire HR department or do much in the way of advertising when positions come open.

        The reason why we're where we are in terms of these Kafkaesque hiring systems is because of bad behavior by the companies doing the hiring. You have to run through hundreds of applications to the companies large enough to advertise because it takes hundreds often times just to get a few of the applications seen by somebody that can make a hiring position. It's probably part of why so many people job hunt before they need a job. (Also the fact that it's often times the only way to get a decent raise is part of it)

    I don't think we need to be all fancy an invoke Immanuel Kant. Just considering how much the companies, etc, lie about themselves and the job opportunities and their completely unrealistic requirements. They don't seem to have any moral qualms about lying. I don't see a problem with lying to them. A job interview in some regard is a lie agreed upon, they lie to you and you lie to them. All within reason. Nobody wants to be caught in the lie after all.

    There have already been complaints from companies how the applicants are using AI to pad their CV:s. Only they are allowed to pad things with AI? Job interviews in that regard are already stuck in the circle of lies. They lie, you lie, then you lie to their bot, and then to their face, then they lie to your face. Then they pick the CEO's nephew cause he knows to to write HTML and that is just like C++ or something.

    Job interviews today are nothing but a pain in the arse. I'm glad I don't do it very often anymore. A few months ago I got a call from some recruiter that just wouldn't stop talking. After a bit I managed to get a question in and asked if they had read my CV? They said yes. I said bye and then I hung up. Clearly they had not if they had to ask all these questions.

      There's something else everybody should remember before pulling Kant and getting all philosophical:

      AI is a fucking machine.

      Since when is it immoral to abuse a machine?

      If whoever runs the machine takes it personally, that's their problem. They chose to put a machine in front of me and I have no moral obligation to a machine. I will abuse the machine and sleep perfectly well the same night.

      If they fronted an HR person however, that would be different. I would treat the human interviewer with the basic respect I owe to other human being and I would not lie to them.

        Employees lie all the time, but plausible deniability is a core value throughout corporate america. You don't even want to show the appearance of potentially lying to the company, ever. If you actually lie, do so in a way that nobody would suspect, that's just good business. When your lies might start to come out to haunt you, and others, that's the time to "lateral" to a competitor - before the consequences of your fabrications are known.

          I don't.

          I learned a long time ago that it hurts momentarily to fess up to your own mistakes immediately, but in the long run, it makes you more respected, more trusted and more desirable an employee to keep around.

          Either that or I've been phenomenally lucky and all my employers considered mistakes something that happens, and owning up to them a quality. But I have a feeling honest employees naturally tend to end up working for honest employers, so maybe it wasn't such a coincidence.

            I don't care whose mistakes they are, problems need to be communicated ASAP. Other people's mistakes are often more painful, politically, to bring up - our mega-corp culture has all the "blame free" "anti-retaliation" trainings, but in the end you still have humans over you in the reporting chain and pointing out their screwups can lead to repercussions both painful and difficult to prove as retaliation.

            Again, that depends on who you're talking about... good rational people will see it that way. Small minded selfish ladder climbers? There are too many of those in any organization of any size to ignore them with impunity.

            There's some of that... I've had a couple of bosses that tell the tale:

            Engineer makes mistake at BigCorp X, costs the company Ten/Hundred Million Dollars, goes to boss "Welp, I guess I'm fired, right?" Boss replies along the lines of: "You know what you did?" Yes, of course. "Are you ever going to make that mistake again?" No, of course not. "Well, I just spent X Million Dollars on your training, why would I get rid of you now?"

            Now, we are presently picking up the pieces from one of those "fast and loose with the sum-total of the evidence" managers who took a lateral out a few years back, and his cut corners are hurting us quite a bit. These things happen, nobody is dying, but we will probably keep the department entertained for 18 to 24 months fixing something he should have flagged and fixed back prior to product launch - it would have delayed us maybe 3 months back then, probably cost him his annual bonus for not delivering on-time, so... he takes the bonus and starts looking for a way out. Some people make a habit of doing that repeatedly. Some people are just so dumb they will make similar mistakes in the future, but IMO / IME the honest ones who freely tell you about their past screwups are _usually_ the ones who both learn and teach from those mistakes to avoid similar problems in the future.

            Well, I definitely didn't last long at a couple of places I worked and that had more to do with insecure executives who hid their problems and laid blame anywhere but their own feet - not often on me, but that isn't the point, the point is: if you have to lie about your business in order for it to carry on, it's probably not carrying on much longer after the lies anyway. Last one of those I quit died during the pandemic, the place I ended up is still going strong.

        But you're just invoking Kant's main basis of categorical imperatives without using the exact same wording.

        He articulated the view that you should construct rules to prevent yourself from ever actively debasing the transcendental dignity of other human beings. And, as you note, machines are not human beings. There's no dignity there to disrespect or ignore.

        Many people do not regard it as immoral to abuse animals. "They were put on earth for men to use, and hunt, and kill, and eat."

        Others demur, and regard it as immoral to abuse things with consciousness and/or able to experience pain.

        If you believe a machine to be conscious (as some people do about AIs/LLMs), then perhaps you might regard it as immoral to abuse that consciousness.

        Note: I am just voicing an argument I suspect others might employ. I don't believe LLMs to be conscious, or indeed any other current software described as 'AI'.

    If i ever get called for an interview by Meta Faceplant, i will lie. I will lie and lie and lie like a Jen Barber. If i don't get the job i will smile and leave. But then again, i wouldn't show up in the first place, so.....

      That open lying is reserved for top level management. If you're not applying for at least a C-level title, you'll be expected to at least keep the appearance of truthfulness.

      Entry level unskilled employees are required to be 100% truthful and forthright at all times and will be terminated and potentially sued for damages if they ever do get caught in a lie.

        Entry level unskilled employees potentially face the same treatment, even if they're 100% truthful and don't make major mistakes, often because someone higher up blames them for their mistake. So, what's the difference?

          The two ends of the economic spectrum have this in common: The top has so much that penalties are always trivial. The bottom has nothing to lose, so penalties are meaningless.

    Kant is correct. Telling a lie is never morally permissible. Unless they suffer from psychopathy, people choose to lie because it is the lesser of two evils.

    If some company wanted to "interview" me as part of their hiring process, I'd say, "I'm happy to answer your questions, but first I have one for you. Are you a real human or an AI chatbot?" If the answer is anything but real human, the interview would be over. I'm not interested in working for an organization actively persuing the dehumanization of its workforce.

      Even telling a lie to an inanimate object?

      When you connect to a VPN to convince Netflix you're in another country so it lets you watch that show you can't watch in your own country, do you feel bad about lying to the Netflix app?

      Don't fall into the anthromorphizing trap. AI is not covered by human rules of morality.

      The people who create and run AI try very hard to make you think those machines are intelligent, to elicit in you the urge to act morally and ultimately submit to what they want you to do. But always remember that you're talking to a computer. It's not alive, it has no concept of good or bad, it's unconcerned by your attempts to do right by it.

      Don't treat AI like the AI's puppetmaster would like you to treat AI. AI is nothing more than a thing, and you don't owe things respect or decency. Even the dumbest animal in the animal kingdom has more rights to decency and respect than a computer, because it's alive and a computer is not.

        Morals are sanctioned by or operative on one's conscience or ethical judgment, irrespective of external factors such as who or what someone is communicating with.

          Not so.

          Morals are a set of ethical rules you choose to, or feel compelled to apply to living beings - be they humans or animals - or objects or processes that impact other living beings.

          You don't apply morals to a baseball bat, a pair of scissors or a computer running PowerPoint do you? Why would you apply morals to a computer running ChatGPT?

          If I'm cold, I will burn the baseball bat for warmth.
          If I don't have a can opener, I'll ruin the pair of scissors to open a can for food.
          If a computer stands between me and employment, I'll lie and deceive the program in charge of evaluating me and cheat my way to that job if need be, no problem.

          I would NOT do that with a human interviewer because they're human, and thus are natural recipients of my moral obligations. Computers however can fuck right off. And I'm not even talking about the dubious morality of those who make me talk to a goddamn computer in the first place, for whom I feel little respect, and correspondingly little obligation to play by the rules of.

            Even if there is a serviceable can opener right there, and the scissors don't belong to you? There can clearly be a morality question there, and I'm sure you agree that it is right to avoid ruining the scissors. I'm sure you'll also agree that the morality question is in relation to the owner of the scissors, or perhaps in relation to the needs of any other users of the scissors if they are used communally, and not in relation to the scissors themselves.

            But all property has owners and other users.

            That computer you claim to have no obligation to is likewise someones property and has other users and people depending on it's function.

            I agree you have no obligation to the computer itself, but just like the scissors it would be wrong to ruin it if its not yours.

            In terms of a job interview, it's akin to interacting with a doll at your nieces imaginary tea party. You're interaction with the doll is being observed by your niece, and is a proxy interaction with your niece. You don't owe the doll any respect or consideration, but you'd likely fake it for the benefit of your niece. Likewise your interaction with the computer is a proxy interaction with your potential future employer in some manner. Depending who is looking at the interaction it may be just be an HR drone, or even an outsourced HR drone, it may be your future manager in person, or nobody at all. You don't owe the computer anything, but your behaviour is going to depend on the impression you care to make on the people behind the screen.

            For some of us, being told to play nicely with their dolls to get a job is a bridge too far and we can afford to call them out on this nonsense and look elsewhere. For others of us, they will need or want that job enough to put up with the indignity.

            The same as every other nonsense hoop people are asked to jump through to get a job.

              That computer you claim to have no obligation to is likewise someones property and has other users and people depending on it's function.

              I will not touch my neighbor's computer. However, the AI usually runs on iron owned by unprincipled Big Data corporations (which have a legal persona but are not real persons) and they do the bidding of another corporation looking to hire someone. A talking machine owned and controlled by psychopathic corporate non-persons have zero value to me and commands no respect whatsoever. I don't feel bound by a duty to preserve any corporation from harm through my action with any of their properties.

              The same as every other nonsense hoop people are asked to jump through to get a job.

              I agree that getting a job has been a pretty silly exercize in convincing BS'ing for many decades (although I will say, I don't know if I got lucky, but I always had real job interviews with actually interesting interviewers myself). But at least you talked to a person.

              Replacing the person with a machine is the ultimate insult to a human being's intelligence and debases the value of humanity to that of another machine. And while it's been that way practically for a long time, there's a difference between pretending to make an interview a meaningful attempt at employer-employee matching and telling in no uncertaintain term, straight in the candidate's face, that they're not worth more than a few minutes worth of CPU cycles.

            No. Morals are a set of ethical rules you choose to, or feel compelled to live by.

            Yes, people who have morals live by them. What you are referring to is situational ethics, which is something altogether different. I hope it's clear to you now, but I admit, I'm not optimistic that is the case.

        Like a phone or a paper form? There are people on the other end of the phone and form, just like there are people on the other end of that AI. Sorry, this is just a copout.

        The people who create and run AI try very hard to make you think those machines are intelligent, to elicit in you the urge to act morally and ultimately submit to what they want you to do. But always remember that you're talking to a computer. It's not alive, it has no concept of good or bad, it's unconcerned by your attempts to do right by it.

        You've touched on the real problem here. Setting up a system where ethics and morality are punished and lying rewarded. It doesn't matter if there's a human face-to-face or some soulless AI asking the questions. Sure, lying in such a situation would be somewhat immoral, but not in a Kantian way. They have waived their right to that respect. My view would be that if one incentivizes bad behavior, one gets bad behavior and it would be immoral to shield them from the consequences of their actions.

        Having said that, there is a desperate need for some sort of gatekeeper to control how many applicants hiring humans have to deal with. For some jobs, the number of applicants are at a sane, small number, and there's no real excuse for avoiding human interaction. But when applications get into ratios of hundreds per available job, the employer needs automated tools to filter the immense load. Thus, I think there is a place for AI-related phases to help weed out frivolous applications and people who are obviously poor fits.

      There is no "lesser of two evils" in the Kantian worldview. To him, evils are defined by your willingness to engage in what Kant called "Radical evil": making a moral judgement wherein you place yourself above others by diminishing their value as a person.

      As such, lying is always wrong, no matter the consequences, because you're taking the other person in the conversation and deeming them, in your head, as less worthy of the truth than you. Kant wasn't an idiot, he knew that one person alone following this approach would be mistreated and abused by others, and that things he deemed immoral were sometimes necessary for survival in a world where others are also immoral, but if you were seeking a maximally moral life you'd act that way all the time, because if everyone acted with that kind of morality the world would be a better place.

      Like most moral philosophers, it's hard to say it's right, but I personally believe that if you don't temper your utilitarianism with a dash of categorical imperatives, you're going to end up a rationalizing asshole who thinks they're always right, while simultaneously being kind of a shit.

        Kantianism doesn't apply to talking automata, however clever they sound, therefore the argument is moot.

        Given that the example which Kant shot down was the ax murderer scenario, then the moral judgment is appropriate. The ax murderer starts with no value as a person. They won't get any better, if you merely tell them the truth and allow them to cause more harm.

          Yeah, naturally. That to me, way more than the classic objection of "well what if you were in a really insane hypothetical situation where you could forsee the consequences of your every action and you accidentally helped a really bad person," is the big problem undercutting Kant It's easy to come up with rules that are either wrong headed or self serving, which is why I think of them more as a tonic for the shortcomings of pure unrestrained "objective" utilitarianism, than the actual answer to the problem of ethics. As Gandalf put it, not even the wise can see all ends.

            Like the entire existence of the USSR? These hypothetical situations happen in reality without much need for perfect knowledge.

      As a mental exercise: what do you do when all companies use LLM's to interview candidates? Do you stick to your morals and die/become homeless/forage for food, or do you compromise your morals for necessity?

      My own answer is that I have a family to support. If I have to choose between my morals and my dependents, I will choose my dependents every time. Maslow was correct.

        If I'm looking to get a job somewhere how does lying help me? Perhaps I get the job and short term I make money, but then I fail at the job because I don't actually know anything about the job because I lied about it. Then I'm out of a job and then have to go look again. Sounds exhausting.

          It's just an intellectual exercise in a scenario where you can't get job without being interviewed by the LLM, and you have to lie to the LLM to get past the initial software filters. If you tell the truth to the LLM, you have a high likelihood of your application being shit-canned because you didn't match its exacting patterns, even though you are a good fit for that particular job.

          Its purpose is to expose why it's sometimes appropriate to lie. There are no moral absolutes, and this one is a no-brainer.

            I get that, but what is the difference between lying to a LLM and lying on an online form? The problem isn't the LLM, it's the crappy filters that are in place. Said filters would be in place whether it was an LLM, a simple form, or an HR drone.

            A company with clueless hiring people would not necessarily be someone I'd want to work for. I'm also quite opposed to lying, no matter the context. I'd be right pissed if the guy that was hired to administer our VMWare environment lied about his experience.

            Honesty is still the best policy.

              I think the main effect of trying to replace the human interview process is going to be a vast growth in certification.

              Theoretically, if they have a VCP they know what they're doing at least well enough to pass a test...

              Unfortunately its turtles all the way down, most likely longer term outcome of that will be "why spend $$$ developing a real cert test when we can just have the test candidate converse with a LLM for an hour" and VCP will be $250 of pure profit instead of whatever the high but probably not 100% profit margin is currently.

              The irony of operational certification is over decades of experience and some years with vmware the real measure of a good ops worker is if they have the intestinal fortitude to handle some kind of networking collapse or vSAN implosion. Most of what makes a good sysadmin is not panicking when everyone else is in panic mode and having what boils down to a high enough IQ to get by.

              Also I imagine classic W2 work disappears from the scene. Very few companies have a W2 onsite electrician or plumber or carpenter, likewise just contract with a freelance-ish vmware dude for a vmware admin. I could do that LOL.

        Interesting counterproposal: That would be an indicator that civilization is so staggeringly collapsed that the odds of me being able to create my own more successful company would be very high. Its not that I'm some kind of amazing manager, but if my competitors have all basically given up and thrown in the towel, the incredible weakness of my competition would be a strong sign I'd be very successful.

        Obviously this is a little more realistic for computer programmers than for nuclear engineers.

        On the internet everyone knows LLMs can create all kinds of "noise" in the form of spammy content farms and troll armies on legacy social media, but imagine replacing HR with a LLM, they could send multiple pages of email spam to everyone in the company every five minutes, completely eliminating all chance of productivity. And the first department to try to self destruct it's company will get ahead the furthest so the motivation level is going to be very high to competitively sink the corporate ship. If you think dealing with "big corporate" is ineffective and unproductive now, imagine "now powered by AI (tm)".

    If a company wanted me to interview by chatbot, I'd terminate my application there and then.

    As my increasingly-favourite saying goes:

    If nobody could be bothered to write that text, why should I be bothered to read it?

    So in this case: If nobody could be bothered to interview me, why should I be bothered to be interviewed?
