US sperm donor giant California Cryobank is warning customers it suffered a data breach that exposed customers' personal information:

California Cryobank is a full-service sperm bank providing frozen donor sperm and specialized reproductive services, such as egg and embryo storage. The company is the largest sperm bank in the US and services all 50 states and more than 30 countries worldwide.

California Cryobank detected suspicious activity on its network on April 21, 2024, and isolated the computers from the IT network.

"Through our investigation, CCB determined that an unauthorized party gained access to our IT environment and may have accessed and/or acquired files maintained on certain computer systems between April 20, 2024 and April 22, 2024," reads a from California Cryobank.

[...] An almost a year-long investigation has determined that the attack exposed varying personal data for customers, including names, bank accounts and routing numbers, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, payment card numbers, and/or health insurance information.

In light of the current administration I wouldn't be that surprised if someone like MTG started getting on their bullhorn about identifying 'trans DNA'...

Why do they need to store all that information, presumably unencrypted in clear-text, for Sperm/Egg donations? Some sort of social security or other identification number should be enough. I guess you need some billing information since they charge for this or some services such as long term storage. But the rest. Why? Beyond that they can and it's just asking for trouble down the road.

Someone shopping for donor sperm will want information about the donor. If the sperm bank does not have that information, then the shopper might do better going to a night club.

But is that not more like donor-tinder? Where they want to know things like skin colour, eye colour, height, weight, education level etc. Not their bank account number, driver's license numbers, etc. After all they, all, want white blue eyed blond nordic gods and not fat little basement wankers?

Still that information should be anonymous in that regard and not actually tied to the person. It's statistical data in that regard, not personal data. Somewhere in some table I am sure there is a idnumber that ties the two together. But that is beyond the shoppers, but clearly not the hackers/leakers/whatever we should call them --- wankers.

Just because you will never find it, doesn't mean it isn't there.

Anonymously because the self-described 'superior' races must survive.

Maybe it was put there as a college prank or stunt.

It might be there. You will never be able to identify the true source of where it 'came' from.

I knew a guy growing up that used to brag about how many times he donated... a decade later he was a homeless alcoholic with acute liver failure.

This seems like the sort of data a wank bank should try and keep on hand to share with their customers.

Assuming he actually donated and wasn't just bullshitting I've always wondered how many women chose poorly and how many of those kids would suffer similar fates.
