Don't complain about lack of options. You've got to pick a few when you do multiple choice. Those are the breaks.
Feel free to suggest poll ideas if you're feeling creative. I'd strongly suggest reading the past polls first.
This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

These days a better question would be "where do you find tech jobs?"
All the job sites out there are just brick walls.
Networking? How do you do that? Great if you like shmoozing and sucking dick.
Talk to someone that works at a company? Yea, get past the iron gate and it's still "I don't know of any jobs, I don't even know the person in the cube next to me or anything outside of my very narrow work, go away".
If you have an ok job and are in tech, hang on to it for dear life. Things are going down the shitter really fast.

That is why I've followed turgid's journal with interest. Many of his entries have been complaining about his employment history. Watching as he struggles against the inanity of middle management that has swept across our profession. I have, thankfully, be immune for those concerns for much of my career. But I do have to admit that there is a bit of guilt in being unable to throw a life preserver from my yacht as the others drown.
I've been with my current company for 11 years, working for the same department for 9, and last week was the first time I ever got recruited by an outside recruiter for another position within my own company - not only my own company but at my current location - in another department.
The headline advertised salary was actually top of the possible range of offers, 50% higher than the bottom of the possible range, and 20% lower than my base pay. They didn't mention bonuses, I suspect that title is at 10% bonus, I'm currently at 18% (adjusted for company performance, yadda yadda, in a "bad" year it's usually still over 15%...)
Outside recruiters are, of course, dumb as bricks, probably incorporating AI into their candidate dragnet now, I always tell them "unsubscribe" "stop bothering me" "CEASE AND DESIST" but, of course they keep coming and I've never updated my LinkedIn in the past 12 years so they probably didn't clue in that I'm already "inside" but apparently they do have a geographic fix on me - the next day they offered me a shot at another company in town that's in my line of endeavor but I didn't even know they existed - their website says they've been in the business since 1898, but somehow they're still operating out of a modest building in a warehouse district...
I recently pretty much had to make a leap, and eventually succeeded, but it was 6 months of looking, frustrations galore, and accepting a significantly lower salary than I'd had before although so far at least everything else looks better than where I left.
A few things I learned from that process: - The job boards are basically useless, as you correctly noted. At this point, automated filtering algorithms mean that approximately 95-99% of all applications are completely ignored for reasons that not even the hiring managers could explain coherently. - Human headhunters vary a lot in their quality. The really good ones have established relationships with the companies they're placing people for, while the really bad ones know basically what you know about the state of the job boards. One useful thing you can do is ask anybody you know in the industry who has made a move recently which headhunters they had success with, because that will probably point you in a good direction. - You are 100% correct that the market really is bad right now. Ever since Elon got away with firing most of Twitter's staff, all the big tech companies have had major layoffs, flooding the market with thousands of very qualified techies, many of whom are desperate to find a job before they have to leave the USA. Also, a lot of MBAs are 100% convinced that techies aren't needed because AI will do the job for them.
-- "Think of how stupid the average person is. Then realize half of 'em are stupider than that." - George Carlin
No, they won't. Because they'll be forced to hire people to maintain the massively unstable AI garbage piles that were pieced together by mindlessly stuffing jira requirements into an LLM until they finally reach the breaking point.
Networking? How do you do that? Great if you like shmoozing and sucking dick.
What in the world do you think networking is? For starters, talk with people like you - same general industry and interests. You don't need to suck their dicks. The idea is that you pass on information about work in your organization and region (along with how terrible it might be) and they do the same. Pool information and help each other out. Cooperation.
Networking in person is a proper subset of networking. I see you linked to LinkedIn - are we to suppose that you believe that is all in person networking?
And really how do you get past the several hundred applicants to one job posting? Networking helps with that.

I realise now that I was relatively well paid; I am not rich, but comfortable. Most importantly I have a good pension which is more than I need to live each month. So I also have savings which are slowly growing.
I look at my children who are, of course, adults and although they have their homes they are watching the economy closely. He mentioned that they offered a 401(k) that wouldn't vest at all until he finished 4 years of work for them. I told him that plus the "we're a family" talk was a sign they were going to screw with him as much as possible and then fire him. I didn't, because I would look at the people who had been there 10-25+ years and see how much they had been beaten down by it.
There are 2 reasons job hopping every 3-5 years helps, on average: 1. You tend to get a raise, at least for the first couple of decades before age discrimination kicks in. The reason is this: Inertia tends to keep you near whatever salary and title you were originally hired at. You might get a few percent each year as part of performance review cycles, but you aren't likely to see big jumps even as you gain experience and seniority. 2. You know more people in the local industry, and they know you. Those people become references for future gigs.
Now I'm pushing myself towards financial independence, with the target in sight. Because as much as I like doing software work, I'd much rather do the things I'd like to do with it for fun than because I have to.

A desire for civility is nice, but you try too hard to force your exact version which was viable maybe in the 90s. Best of luck bro, sorry you got triggered bro. Well not really, but I do very much support your political analyses. Stop being authoritarian and witness the personal critiques melt away. Kind of like the abuse here on SN, if it disappears and content is appropriately modded instead of suspected identity or whatever, and rules applied evenly, then MAGICALLY there will be nothing to complain about. I take my lumps if the rules are applied to everyone, but each personal attack from you or anyone else just proves the rules mean nothing until someone is vocally butthurt.
Just because the majority does not like conflict and do not believe abuse is truly happening does not reduce my desire to highlight the wrongs. You do you buddy, just don't expect others to obey your hypocritical whims ;x

... What kind of jobs do you have? Are you in actual tech companies? Or companies that just use tech?
I ask because I have always worked for "tech" or "fintech" companies, and I am not a job hopper. I never left a job on my own volition, yet in my 20+ years of working I've never been in a place more than 4 years. It seems no company I worked at can go 5 years without a major reorganisation, acquisition or outsourcing which results in redundancies. If it is not outsourcing to cheaper countries (as was the case in the past) its the "outsourcing to AI" for which there are now rumblings deep in the bowls of senior management at my current company, and there have already been redundancies (approx 30 people).
I just wonder what kind of companies are out there which need tech people yet are stable enough that you can build a career there for 10+ years. Or is it geographic? We also assist with other projects for other high-profile clients. I've kept more or less the same position the whole time, although I have gotten promoted to low-level manager 20/80. I've stayed away from managerial positions I'm not suited for but kept the productivity of myself and my reports high. Any time there have been reorgs, we've stayed relatively untouched because of our consistent quality and quantity despite the difficulty of the projects we have combined with the fact that any one of us on the special project teams could walk into another job with zero trouble despite many of them being rather esoteric individuals. And really, I think that is the key to a long career in one location: doing something important for somewhere capable of recognizing it.

I recently pretty much had to make a leap, and eventually succeeded, but it was 6 months of looking, frustrations galore, and accepting a significantly lower salary than I'd had before although so far at least everything else looks better than where I left.
A few things I learned from that process:
- The job boards are basically useless, as you correctly noted.

There are 2 reasons job hopping every 3-5 years helps, on average:
1. You tend to get a raise, at least for the first couple of decades before age discrimination kicks in. The reason is this: Inertia tends to keep you near whatever salary and title you were originally hired at. 2. You know more people in the local industry, and they know you. Those people become references for future gigs.

But the point is that advocating oppression is not a defensible position, and not one that can be politely discussed. Reminds me of that scene in "It's a Beautiful Life", where the Italian housewives are sitting around discussing the curriculum their children are being subjected to in Fascist school. The school was presenting the costs of maintaining and treating the developmentally disabled, versus the much cheaper option of just liquidating them through a eugenitics program. The mothers were in shock, that the school would require such complicated math of their darlings! Reminds me of both khallow and dalek, who might be the same person.

I admit I've mostly worked for UK and US companies (based in the UK or Europe), so perhaps companies elsewhere are not so turbulent internally?

I have been relatively lucky. After finishing my PhD in computer science and software engineering, I was recruited to a large firm. There I work on one of the special projects teams. We design software with special considerations, usually one or more of high-assurance, high-integrity, high-availability, high-reliability, real-time, or SOUP mitigation.

Industrial automation, if it's big enough of a company. Although after 15 years, my first job got sold of to a bigger company, which did not have any idea what they bought. Pretty much everyone left from that company in the sold department within 6 months in that city, don't know about other cities, we had a few offices around the country. After that i've been strugling a bit, been to 3 companies in 3 years and been out of a job for a while. The job market is crap even now in that field, but it is getting better.
But i have friends in "real" tech companies. It just seems much more turbulant, but they get severence packages and much better pay, you don't get that in industrial automation or pretty much any other field that i know of, maybe like business or law fields, don't know.
Maybe if it's a place, where they use custom controllers and machine vision and stuff like that, it might be more of a traditional tech job, but where i've worked it's standard industrial controllers and parts.
