The telephone call records comprise part of the evidence presented by a man appealing his conviction in 2012 for a murder committed in 1957 [wikipedia.org] in the U.S. state of Washington. The DeKalb County, Illinois [wikipedia.org] State’s Attorney (prosecutor), according to the New York Daily News [nydailynews.com], believes that the man was wrongly convicted and said that the convict

made a collect call to his parents at 6:57 p.m. Dec. 3, 1957, from a phone booth in downtown Rockford around the time Ridulph was abducted 35 miles away in Sycamore — between 6:45 p.m. and 6:55 p.m.

An AP story in the Seattle Times [seattletimes.com] says that the record of the call was obtained by subpoena. Slashdot commenter Trachman [slashdot.com] remarked upon the length of time that the record had been retained, perhaps longer than is commonly assumed.

Through the Hemisphere Project [wikipedia.org], call records from 1987 onward may be subpoenaed by law enforcement personnel.
