The Guardian [theguardian.com] reports on a study published in the American Journal of Applied Science [thescipub.com] (PDF) about mammalian fossils exposed by erosion along the Irtysh River [wikipedia.org] in Kazakhstan. Among them was a skull belonging to Elasmotherium sibiricum, the Siberian unicorn. Using radiocarbon dating, the researchers determined that the creature died 26 038±356 years ago. Previously, the species had been believed to have been extinct for 350,000 years.
