The AP via Fox News reports [foxnews.com] (Tor-friendly copy) [archive.org] that the world's longest and deepest rail tunnel is set to open 1 June. The Gotthard Base Tunnel [wikipedia.org] is 57.1 km (35.5 miles) long and parts of it lie 2.3 km (1.4 miles) below the surface. It "cost 12.2 billion Swiss francs (about $12 billion)"; construction took 17 years. It will be used by both freight and passenger trains.
