A NASA press release [nasa.gov] promotes a paper published in Geophysical Research Letters [wiley.com]. The ChemCam instrument aboard the agency's Curiosity rover [wikipedia.org] examined certain Martian minerals which had high concentrations of manganese. The authors of the paper conclude that "the lack of correlation between Mn and elements such as S, Cl, and C, reveals that these deposits are Mn-oxides." The discovery is thought to indicate that the atmosphere of Mars formerly contained oxygen.
