CNN has an essay [cnn.com] about workers who gather sulphur from the crater of the Ijen volcano [wikipedia.org] in East Java, Indonesia. The volcano emits fumes which catch fire in places, and which contain sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. The sulphur is hand-carried down the mountain. It is used mainly in the refining of sugar.
