KPIX TV, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco, reports [cbslocal.com] the events of Saturday, November 25.
"You Hacked, ALL Data Encrypted." That was the message on San Francisco Muni station computer screens across the city, giving passengers free rides all day on Saturday. Inside sources say the system has been hacked for days.
"There's no impact to the transit service, but we have opened the fare gates as a precaution to minimize customer impact", said Muni spokesperson Paul Rose.
[...]"I was like, is this part of Black Friday deal, or something?" [said a rider.]
[...]The hack affects employees, as well. According to sources, [San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency] workers are not sure if they will get paid this week.
Cyber attackers also hit Muni's email systems.
By the following evening, KPIX was reporting [cbslocal.com]
Fare gates and ticket machines were back to normal at San Francisco Muni stations Sunday.
Details of how they managed to get themselves pwned are being withheld. Any bets that it's something really embarrassingly basic like the Little Bobby Tables [xkcd.com] example?
