Rep. Matt Gaetz files ethics complaint against Adam Schiff over impeachment inquiry [nypost.com]

WASHINGTON — A congressional ally of President Trump filed an ethics complaint against Rep. Adam Schiff on Wednesday accusing the Intelligence Committee chairman of breaking the rules and making false statements.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) announced the complaint to reporters staking out the closed-door impeachment proceedings.

“Chairman Schiff has abused his authority and seems to believe that the rules of the House of Representatives do not apply to him,” Gaetz said. “We cannot have a multi-tiered justice system in the United States or in the Congress. His egregious behavior must change immediately.”

The ethics complaint is the latest effort by the GOP to derail Schiff’s impeachment investigation, after failing to have him censured or recused from chairing the Intelligence Committee.

Gaetz accuses the California Democrat of violating a House rule of conduct for making a parody of Trump’s telephone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. Gaetz also accuses Schiff of lying to the American public about “Russian collusion” and preventing Gaetz from attending a deposition.

The House is slated to vote Thursday on formalizing the impeachment inquiry [nypost.com], a vote that will set out rules for GOP involvement and open hearings to the public.

Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has blasted the impeachment effort as a sham.

But Democrats believe the evidence presented so far has made a damning case against Trump for seeking foreign interference in a federal election by asking Ukraine to investigate rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
