Staff in office blocks in the area were told to stay inside.Hundreds of people have been evacuated from blocks surrounding the bridge following the incident that began at 1.58pm and have been told to seek alternative accommodation today."People were running for safety" at Borough Market, on the south side of the bridge, says the Sydney Morning Herald's Europe correspondent Bevan Shields."Police screaming at people to move away from Borough Market," he wrote on Twitter."Many are in tears."Cars and buses on the busy bridge were at a standstill after the shooting, with a white truck stopped diagonally across the lanes. Video footage showed police pointing guns at the truck before moving to check its container.British Transport Police said London Bridge station, one of the city's busiest rail hubs, was closed and trains were not stopping there for multiple hours, however the tube station was reopened just after 7pm (local time).City of London Police, the force responsible for the business district, urged people to stay away from the area.A woman travelling on a bus southbound over London Bridge told the BBC she saw what looked like a fight."There were people tussling with one each other and then I realised it was police wrestling with one tall, bearded man," Kirsten Jones said. She says she heard "two loud pops and also saw a spent taser, and then the guy was lying on the floor".Ms Jones said the man "then pulled his coat back which showed he had some sort of vest underneath... The police then moved backwards away quickly".BBC reporter John McManus said he saw a group of men involved in a fight on the bridge."Just a few minutes ago I was walking across London Bridge on the south bank to the north bank of the bridge."There appeared to be a fight going on on the other side of the bridge, with several men attacking one man."Police then arrived and shots were fired, he said. The incident revived memories of the June 2017 London Bridge attack, when three Islamic State-inspired attackers ran down people on the bridge, killing two, before stabbing several people to death in nearby Borough Market. That incident took place days before a general election. Britons are due to go to the polls again on December 12.Prime Minister Boris Johnson's office said he was receiving updates on the incident and was returning to his 10 Downing St. office from campaigning in his local constituency. It is believed Mr Johnson will also hold a special briefing meeting of the UK Government's Cabinet Office Briefing Room (COBRA) at 9.30pm local time (8.30am AEDT), including Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn."My thoughts are first with the emergency services, with police, the bravery they showed in going towards danger as they do. I also want to pay tribute to the extraordinary bravery of the members of the public who physically intervened to protect the lives if others," Mr Johnson told the BBC today."To me they represent the very best of our country and I thank them on behalf of all of our country."The Metropolitan Police are continuing their investigations and I can assure everyone that anyone involved in the crimes of these attacks will be hunted down and brought to justice and I think the message we send to them and anyone associated with this type of attack will be one that is familiar: It's that this country will never be intimidated by this sort of attack and our British values will prevail."Both Labour and the Conservatives [9news.com.au] suspended campaigning in the city after the attack and the prime minister was also cancelling political events for tomorrow. The White House in the United States has also released a statement in light of the attack, saying US President Donald Trump [9news.com.au] has been briefed. The "United States strongly condemns all horrific acts of violence on innocent people, and we pledge our full support to our ally, the United Kingdom," the statement said.In March 2017, an attacker fatally struck four people with a car on nearby Westminster Bridge then fatally stabbed a police officer before security forces shot and killed him in a courtyard outside Parliament.Security officials earlier this month downgraded Britain's terrorism threat level from "severe" to "substantial," which means an attack is seen as "likely" rather than "highly likely." The assessment was made by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, an independent expert body that evaluates intelligence, terrorist capability and intentions. The UK's terror threat was last listed as "substantial" in August 2014; since then it has held steady at "severe," briefly rising to "critical" in May and September 2017.With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires. With Wires.Continue readingCONTACT USSend your photos, videos and stories to 9News contact@9news.com.au [mailto]
