Do you remember when 100 PFLOPS used to be a large number? Researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) just demonstrated [sdsc.edu] that one can rent 15k GPUs from the three main Cloud providers (AWS, Azure and GCP) for an equivalent of 170 fp32 PFLOPS and sustain that for a whole workday! And it is not even their first attempt at doing such a thing. Last November they provisioned 380 fp32 PFLOPS from the Clouds [linkedin.com], but did not sustain if for that long.
